El género narrativo -una forma literaria fundamental en todas las culturas- tiene sus raíces en Occidente en los grandes poemas épicos de la antigüedad clásica. Desde entonces ha evolucionado hasta producir el romance medieval, las primeras formas de novela en la Italia renacentista y la gran diversidad de estilos narrativos que se cultivan en la actualidad. En la narración siempre han estado presentes dos tendencias básicas -el realismo y la fantasía- configurando el espacio del relato. Este libro, de gran interés teórico, ofrece distintas perspectivas para analizar el género narrativo y sus diversas modalidades, considerando aspectos lingüísticos, cognitivos, comunicacionales y culturales. De esta forma, aborda las principales teorías que analizan estructuralmente los textos narrativos y el contexto en que han sido producidos, así como su relación con las ciencias sociales.

El objeto inmediato de este libro son las teorías de la narración, y a través de ellas los textos narrativos. Con un carácter especulativo, apunta en la dirección de la semiótica y la lingüística más que hacia la crítica aplicada. No se articula en torno a comentarios específicos y sigue un plan estructural.

This book explores the discourse pragmatics of reportive evidentiality in Macedonian, Japanese and English through an empirical study of evidential strategies in narrative retelling. The patterns of evidential use (and non-use) found in these languages are attributed to contextual, cultural and grammatical factors that motivate the adoption of an 'epistemological stance' - a concept that owes much to recent trends in Cognitive Linguistics. The patterns of evidential strategies found in the three languages provide a fine illustration of the balancing act between speakers' expressions of their own subjectivity, their motivations to tell a coherent and exciting story, and their motivations to be faithful retellers of someone elses' story. These pressures are further complicated by the grammatical and pragmatic conventions that are particular to each language. Evidentiality and Epistemological Stance: narrative retelling will appeal to those interested in evidentiality, grammar and pragmatics, cross-linguistics discourse analysis, linguistic subjectivity and narrative.
