Effective field theory (EFT), a technique used extensively in particle physics, provides a framework for systematically describing nuclear systems in a way consistent with quantum chromodynamics, the underlying theory of strong interactions. Because it offers the possibility of a unified description of all low-energy processes involving nucleons, it has the potential to become the foundation of conventional nuclear physics.Since the early 1990's when Weinberg applied the techniques of EFT to multiple-nucleon systems, significant developments have been made. However, serious obstacles have also been encountered. This book contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Nuclear Physics with Effective Field Theory, held in the Kellogg Radiation Laboratory at Caltech on the 26th and 27th of February 1998, which specifically addressed those issues. Physicists from different areas of sub-atomic physics gathered in an attempt to arrive at a consistent power counting scheme for the nucleon-nucleon interaction, a first step toward dealing with few-nucleon systems and ultimately nuclear matter and finite nuclei.

This volume presents the important recent progress in both theoretical and phenomenological issues of strong coupling gauge theories, with/without supersymmetry and extra dimensions, etc. Emphasis is placed on dynamical symmetry breaking with large anomalous dimensions governed by the dynamics near the nontrivial fixed point. Also presented are recent developments of the corresponding effective field theories, such as those including light spectra other than the Nambu-Goldstone particles.This book is a must for all those who are interested in dynamical symmetry breaking and effective field theories in a modern version.

The revival of the Skyrme model for baryons has led to a large variety of investigations ranging from the foundations of effective meson theories and chiral soliton models, over numerous extensions of Skyrme's original concept, to many impressive results in applications to the meson-baryon system. Sum rules, chiral perturbation theory and the formulation of QCD on a lattice are some of the tools used to test models, like the stochastic vacuum, the instanton liquid or the consideration of monopoles in the vacuum to produce dual superconductivity and confinement.
