Somos memoria. Lo que somos y lo que sabemos está tejido con los hilos del recuerdo y de la memoria. Somos lo que sabemos pero quizá sólo sabemos quiénes somos cuando nos acercamos al sufrimiento y a las emociones de esas mujeres y de esos hombres –ausentes e invisibles– que a lo largo de la convulsa historia de la humanidad han sufrido las mil y una formas posibles de la injusticia, de la tiranía y de la violencia. Por ello, en nombre del futuro no cabe el olvido de un pasado y de un presente tan imperfectos (guerras, violaciones, genocidios, dictaduras...) ni el fomento de una amnesia colectiva que menosprecia el valor de la memoria colectiva y sigue arrojando a las víctimas de la barbarie a las fosas del olvido. De acuerdo con el consejo feminista de hacer visible lo invisible, urge mirar el mundo con los ojos de los olvidados y de quienes nacieron para perder y vindicar el derecho a la memoria como un deber de justicia con las víctimas de tantas imposturas, de tantos silencios, de tantas desigualdades, de tantos exilios, de tantas cárceles y de tantas muertes. De ahí que educar en la memoria de la barbarie humana constituya un deber ineludible de la educación democrática. El objetivo de este libro es, por una parte, estimular la memoria de la educación en España y el conocimiento de cómo ha sido, de cómo es y quizá de cómo debiera ser la educación que queremos y, por otra, reflexionar sobre la importancia del aprendizaje escolar de la memoria colectiva en la construcción de una ciudadanía democrática y divulgar orientaciones y materiales didácticos en torno a la educación de la memoria.

This volume discusses a broad range of themes and methodological issues around images, photography and film. It is about sharing a fascination about the visual history of education and how images became the most influential (circulating) media within the field of education on local, regional, national and international levels. Within this volume images are primarily analyzed as presenters, mediators, and means of observation. Images are seen as mobile reproducible media which play an active role within the public and educational sphere. They are means of observation and storytelling, they shape identities by presenting models of how we should act in and perceive the world, they circulate though different contexts and media, all of which impacts their meanings.

This book offers a path forward, for the growing collaboration in social studies education between Global North and South educators, practitioners, and researchers.
