The linkage between transport and economic development is a highly contentious issue which has generated considerable debate. This Round Table set out to clarify this issue by analysing the arguments for and against the presumed linkage between "transport infrastructure" and "economic development".

This Round Table addresses the macroeconomic effects of transport infrastructure policies, and aimed at identifying tools that could determine the overall volume of public expenditure for transport infrastructure investment. It also identifies methods for assessing macroeconomic impact.

The Round Table examines the costs and benefits of sprawl, shedding light on the linkages between urban form and economic growth, and explored the tradeoffs involved in trying to contain sprawl.

To mark its hundredth Round Table on transport economics, the ECMT decided to publish a special issue. Fifty European experts were asked to submit papers examining not only the major issues addressed by transport economics in the past, but also those that are likely to emerge in the future.

The Round Table discusses changes in national systems of transport infrastructure planning and the lessons for the further improvement of planning processes.

The Round Table examined large-scale sporting, cultural and festive events in Europe and the rest of the world, and noted that setting ambitious targets contributes to the quality of the event.

As the countries of Central and Eastern Europe undergo radical economic upheavals, the question of pan-European transport is examined in this Round Table.
