Excerpt from Prehistoric Culture of Cuba Historians do not agree as to the first landfall of Columbus in Cuba, but no one doubts that it was somewhere on the northern shore of what is now Santiago province. At whatever point he landed, he found the natives living in houses, making use of ham mocks of cotton and palm fibers, and possessing stone idols and carved wooden masks. Columbus learned from them of a ruler, whom he called king, of a country to the south, which was rich in gold. Nothing is said in his diary of the natives to the west of the landfall, but he sailed westward a few leagues along the northern shore without finding people worthy of special mention. Later, turning back, he rounded Cape Maysi and examined a section of the southern coast, but was not attracted farther toward the west. Ou this side of Cuba he again heard of the wealth of the Indians of the south. The implication is that the maple of eastern Cuba knew the Haytians and recognized that their culture was superior to that of the western end of their own island. They held out no induce ment to Columbus to extend his explorations westward, as we might suspect they would have done had there been a superior race in that end of the island. Excerpt from The New America and the Far East, Vol. 7: China (Continued); Cuba It has been impossible to follow any hard and fast policy, but we have had to meet the different conditions in different parts of the province as best we could, giving more here and less there, but giving only just enough to make it possible for the people to reestablish themselves upon the most economical basis. After all, it has been a good deal like housekeeping on a gigantic scale, and, as some of our best and ablest men have Sprung from the very poorest families, and their development under conditions of the greatest hardships and adversity has tended to foster the very qualities which have made them successful in-after life, so will the desperate struggles which these little municipalities are now having tend to make them all the better in the future. They are learning the necessity of the closest attention to every little detail. In many of them men are serving in public positions for no salary, giving their whole time to establishing affairs upon a prosperous basis. Schoolteachers are working for less than their former salaries, as indeed are all the officials of the province, but they are working cheerfully, and the spirit which is developing among them promises much for the future. Disorders are few, and travellers passing through the province find everywhere open-hearted hospitality and cheerful greetings. The disposition of the people is buoyant and cheerful, and it is very improbable that any extensive police force will be needed, even in the wilder portions of the interior, after the people are once more fairly reestablished on their plantations. Excerpt from Battles and Capitulation of Santiago De Cuba: Completed Santiago de Cuba, the capital of the province of the same name, occupying the eastern part of the island, contained at the begin ning of the present insurrection about inhabitants; but the population has been reduced to about three-fourths of that, owing to emigrations and epidemics. The city is built on very hilly ground, at the head of a bay which is almost entirely closed in and very safe, so that, when seen from the city, it looks more like a lake than an arm of the sea. The distance to the mouth of the harbor in a straight line is about 4 miles. This mouth, which is extremely narrow, is bounded on the east by the heights of the Morro and on the west by those of the Socapa, both of which are very steep toward the south, that is, where they border on the sea. Excerpt from My Winter in Cuba The personal pronoun my in the title of the present work is explanatory, not egotistical. The Winter herein described is mine, and notanother's, in that it deals so largely with that domestic side of Cuban life, which few travellers ever see, and whereof none, to my knowledge, have ever written. The reader may find elsewhere more graphic descriptions of Cuba's scenery; combined with accurate tables of her statistics, and profound views of her politics; but he will find no work that opens to him so frankly the doors of Cuban homes, and allows him to watch the inner currents of Cuban life. Nor could the present narrative have flowed thus fieely across private thresholds, except by the use of fictitious names. There may have been samanos in Cuba, but I never saw them there; The real names of my kind enter tainers are stereotyped only on my heart. But, with this slight exception, the narrative may be relied upon as strictly true. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
