This is the first English book on the economic relations between China and Latin America written by Chinese scholars. The authors are all from the Institute of Latin American Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences — China’s premier think tank. By combining empirical techniques and political-economic analysis, it investigates the history of and the outlook for China-Latin America relations. It offers readers insights into the Chinese perspective and an evaluation of the development of the relations between the two parties.

Many efforts have been spend on investigating increasing interdependence within the Pacific Rim. However, the dynamic development of relations between Latin America und East Asia in the last two decades have not attracted much academic attention. In order to fill this gap the authors of this volume present one of the first encompassing analysis of political and economic relations between Latin America and East Asia.

This book analyses the economic and policy relationships between China and Latin America. Key issues covered by the contributors include international trade and direct investment, empirical analysis of the complementary and intra-industry trade nature of Latin American and Chinese trade, the comparison of the production and trade of parts and components in East Asia and in Latin America and an examination of policy issues such as policies towards small and medium sized enterprises as well as pension reforms.

This book presents an alternative development path for Latin America based on an East Asian model.
