Applying Earth science knowledge to sustainable development, disaster risk reduction, and climate action Data and insights from Earth observations are critical for assessing the health of our planet, monitoring change, and addressing societal challenges from the local to the global scale. Earth Observation Applications and Global Policy Frameworks presents case studies of Earth science information integrated with statistics and socioeconomic data for managing development targets, improving disaster resilience, and mitigating and adapting to climate change. It also showcases open collaboration among researchers, United Nations and government officials, entrepreneurs, and the public. Volume highlights include: Case studies of projects working with local and national governments, and through public-private partnerships, to make the most of the large volume of complex and diverse Earth science information sources Applications from diverse disciplines including wetland preservation, food security, water quality, marine conservation, disasters, urbanization, drought and land degradation, and greenhouse gas monitoring Examples of internationally coordinated initiatives that are driving progress on three landmark United Nations agreements Resources for decision-makers and practitioners in local and national governments The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals.

The result of a workshop bringing together an international advisory board of experts in science, satellite technologies, industry innovations, and public policy, this book addresses the current and future roles of satellite Earth observations in solving large-scale environmental problems. The book showcases the results of engaging distinct communities to enhance our ability to identify emerging problems and to administer international regimes created to solve them. It also reviews the work of the Policy and Earth Observation Innovation Cycle (PEOIC) project, an effort aimed at assessing the impact of satellite observations on environmental policy and to propose a mission going forward that would launch an “innovation cycle”. The achievements of such a mission would feed back to innovations in next-generation observation technology, thus contributing to global policy demand for policy-relevant information. Earth Observation for Flood Applications: Progress and Perspectives describes the latest scientific advances in Earth Observation. With recent floods around the world becoming ever more devastating, there is a need for better science enabling more effective solutions at a fast pace. This book aims at stretching from the current flood mapping to diverse real data so as to estimate the flood risk and damage. Earth Observation for Flood Applications: Progress and Perspectives includes three parts containing each a separate but complementary topic area under floods. Each chapter unfolds various applications, case studies, and illustrative graphics. In terms of flood mapping and monitoring, the usage of multi-sensor satellite data, web-services information, microwave remote sensing methods are discussed in depth. So, this book is a valuable resource for scientists, researchers, and students in the area of earth observation. Focuses in on one specific application field of Earth Observation Brings the latest scientific advances and perspectives from experts around the world Includes extensive figures, tables, and case studies to illustrate real-life applications

The United States Government invests in Earth observations that are critical to the protection of lives and property, national security, economic growth, and scientific inquiry. These data provide the fundamental basis for our understanding of all Earth-system phenomena, including weather and climate, natural hazards, land-use change, ecosystem health, and natural-resource availability. A core principle of the U.S. Government is that Federal Earth-observation data are public goods, paid for by the American people, and that free, full, and open access to these data significantly enhances their value. The return on our annual Earth-observation investment increases in accordance with the data's widespread use in public- and private-sector decision-making. Through the advocacy of the international Group on Earth Observations and the leadership of the United States, international data sharing has increased dramatically over the past decade. Our international engagement provides U.S. entities with access to valuable new sources of Earth-observation data.

"The Common Framework for Earth Observations Data provides guidance to data producers in Federal agencies for improving and standardizing their data-management practices. This document is primarily concerned with data from the Federal Government’s Earth-observing systems, though its recommendations may be useful for others, such as local, state, international, and commercial data creators whose Earth observations are widely shared. The recommendations in the Common Framework are focused on the discoverability, accessibility, and usability of Earth observations and derived data products Topics addressed include Data-Search and Discovery Services, Data-Access Services, Data Documentation, and a section on Compatible Formats and Vocabularies. The recommendations in this document are not requirements, but can serve as a reference for data managers and users on a suggested subset of the many available standards. The recommendations in this document are intended to be broadly applicable, but not comprehensive. There may be types of observations and special cases for which other practices will be necessary. Where the recommendations fit the circumstances, their application will help ensure that Earth-observation data are more discoverable, accessible, and usable"--Page 1.
