The Symposium aimed at analysing and solving the various problems of representation and analysis of decision making in economic systems starting from the level of the individual firm and ending up with the complexities of international policy coordination. The papers are grouped into subject areas such as game theory, control methods, international policy coordination and the applications of artificial intelligence and experts systems as a framework in economic modelling and control. The Symposium therefore provides a wide range of important information for those involved or interested in the planning of company and national economics.

Dynamic Modelling and Control of National Economies 1983 contains the proceedings of the Fourth IFAC/IFORS/IIASA Conference and the 1983 SEDC Conference on Economic Dynamics and Control held at Washington D.C., USA on June17-19, 1983. Separating the 65 papers presented in the conference as chapters, this book covers a broad class of problems or notions arising both in economic theory, control applications to planning, and implementation issues. Some chapters discuss multi-level interactions of government and private sectors in economic development; inflation and economic policy in an open economy; foreign debt and exchange rate stability in a developing country; and expectations in numerical general equilibrium models. This book also explains a rational decision-making process for resource policymaking; inference of the structure of economic reasoning from natural language analysis; modeling and analysis of a national economy; and methodological issues in global modeling. Econometric analysis of the economic effects of population change, aspects of optimal estimation control strategies in econometrics, and optimal policies for interdependent economies are also discussed. This book will be useful to those engaged in economic and control theory research.

This IFAC symposium considers the modelling, analysis and control of various economic and socio-economic systems. The volume is divided into three sections covering: economic theory; macroeconomic policymaking - national, sectoral and regional models; mathematical, algorithmical and computational methods of modelling, giving a clear and concise view of the use of computer systems in the world of economics.

This 1998 book presents the econometric analysis of single-equation and simultaneous-equation models in which the jointly dependent variables can be continuous, categorical, or truncated. Despite the traditional emphasis on continuous variables in econometrics, many of the economic variables encountered in practice are categorical (those for which a suitable category can be found but where no actual measurement exists) or truncated (those that can be observed only in certain range). Such variables are involved, for example, in models of occupational choice, choice of tenture in housing, and choice of type of schooling. Models with regulated prices and rationing and models for program evaluation also represent areas of application for the techniques presented by the author.

Finding an alternative to supplement military ways of resolving international conflicts has been taken up by many people skilled in various areas such as political science, economics, social studies, modelling and simulation, artificial intelligence and expert systems, military strategy and weaponry as well as private business and industry. The Workshop will therefore be of use as it looks at various control methods which would create a conciliatory social and political environment or climate for seeking and obtaining non-military solutions to international conflicts and to solutions to national conflicts which may lead to international conflicts.

The interaction of various ideas from different researchers provides a main impetus to mathematical prosress. An important way to make communication possible is through international conferences on more or less spezialized topics~ The existence of several centers for research in probabil ity and statistics in the eastern part of central Europe - somewhat vaguely described as the Pannonian area - led to the idea of organizing Pannonian Symposia on Mathematical Statistics (PS~1S). The second such symposium was held at Bad Tatzmannsdorf, Burgenland (Austria), from 14 to 20 June 1981. About 100 researchers from 13 countries participated in that event and about 70 papers were delivered. Most of the papers dealt with one of the following topics: nonparametric estimation theory, asymptotic theory of estimation, invariance principles, limit theorems and aoplications. Full versions of selected papers, all presenting new results are included in this volume. The editors take this opportunity to thank the following institutions for their assistance in making the conference possible: the Provincial Government of Burgenland, the Austrian Ministry for Research and Science, the Burgenland Chamber of Commerce, the Control Data Corporation, the Austrian Society for Statistics and Informatics, the Landes hypothekenbank Burgenland, the Volksbank Oberwart, and the Community and Kurbad AG of Bad Tatzmannsdorf. We are also greatly indebted to all those persons who helped in editing this volume and in particular to the vii W. Grossmann et al. reds.), Probability and Statistical Inference, vii-viii.
