This book offers an extensive, interdisciplinary overview of dynamic textiles. Specifically, it discusses new findings and design concepts concerning the integration of smart materials into textile substrates and their corresponding dynamic behavior. Introducing the topic of dynamic color in textiles, it presents experimental procedures to achieve color change and dynamic light transmittance in thermochromic textiles, and examines their thermoresponsive behavior and respective electrical activation. Moreover, it also addresses the topic of dynamic form and reports on the authors’ original findings using shape-memory alloys and geometric morphologies based on origami techniques. Covering innovative smart textiles and important considerations in terms of design variables when developing textiles with dynamic qualities, and providing extensive, practice-oriented insights into the interaction of textiles with light, it is primarily intended for academics, researchers and practitioners developing smart, dynamic and interactive textiles. The sections describing in detail the experimental work aimed at the integration of smart materials in textile substrates also appeal to professionals in the textile industry.

Lasers play an increasingly important role in a variety of detection techniques, making inelastic light scattering a tool of growing value in the investigation of dynamic and structural problems in chemistry, biology, and physics. Until the initial publication of this work, however, no monograph treated the principles behind current developments in the field. This volume presents a comprehensive introduction to the principles underlying laser light scattering, focusing on the time dependence of fluctuations in fluid systems; it also serves as an introduction to the theory of time correlation functions, with chapters on projection operator techniques in statistical mechanics. The first half comprises most of the material necessary for an elementary understanding of the applications to the study of macromolecules, or comparable sized particles in fluids, and to the motility of microorganisms. The study of collective (or many particle) effects constitutes the second half, including more sophisticated treatments of macromolecules in solution and most of the applications of light scattering to the study of fluids containing small molecules. With its wide-ranging discussions of the many applications of light scattering, this text will be of interest to research chemists, physicists, biologists, medical and fluid mechanics researchers, engineers, and graduate students in these areas.

Pedestrian mobility and the regeneration of the European city centreSpatial Metro, a project largely funded by the EU, aims to make city visits more enjoyable for pedestrians by making cities easier to navigate, easier to walk around and easier to understand and appreciate. This is achieved in various ways, including illuminating characteristic buildings, providing 'metro style' maps as well as appropriate information and signposting for pedestrians and the application of GPS technology.Together with municipalities and universities, five cities (Norwich, Bristol, Rouen, Koblenz and Biel/Bienne) in North West Europe have carried out pilot studies and exchanged experiences. In this publication, their findings are shared with the reader.

Our knowledge of biological macromolecules and their interactions is based on the application of physical methods, ranging from classical thermodynamics to recently developed techniques for the detection and manipulation of single molecules. These methods, which include mass spectrometry, hydrodynamics, microscopy, diffraction and crystallography, electron microscopy, molecular dynamics simulations, and nuclear magnetic resonance, are complementary; each has its specific advantages and limitations. Organised by method, this textbook provides descriptions and examples of applications for the key physical methods in modern biology. It is an invaluable resource for undergraduate and graduate students of molecular biophysics in science and medical schools, as well as research scientists looking for an introduction to techniques beyond their specialty. As appropriate for this interdisciplinary field, the book includes short asides to explain physics aspects to biologists and biology aspects to physicists.

A comprehensive overview and summary of recent achievements and the latest trends in bioinspired thermal materials. Following an introduction to different thermal materials and their effective heat transfer to other materials, the text discusses heat detection materials that are inspired by biological systems, such as fire beetles and butterflies. There then follow descriptions of materials with thermal management functionality, including those for evaporation and condensation, heat transfer and thermal insulation materials, as modeled on snake skins, polar bears and fire-resistant trees. A discussion of thermoresponsive materials with thermally switchable surfaces and controllable nanochannels as well as those with high thermal conductivity and piezoelectric sensors is rounded off by a look toward future trends in the bioinspired engineering of thermal materials. Straightforward and well structured, this is an essential reference for newcomers as well as experienced researchers in this exciting field.
