Structured like a stational liturgy, Living Well & Dying Well calls us to stop and face the five spiritual crises-faith, despair, impatience, pride, and greed-and five remedies-inspiration, hope, patience, humility, and generosity-that are pivotal moments on the journey of life and death. Along with each of these remedies, O'Brien offers meditations, prayers, and a summons to communal support. This latter piece is crucial-living well and dying well requires us to love and accompany one another in our journeys.

'Christopher's house stood out on its cliff like stages of lunar madness. It was the night of the first storm, not of winter, but of that week before winter which is the last warning to all creatures to dig themselves in...' Christopher Barocco is a self-made man of considerable means who decrees the building of a house in his image, to be carved out of a wild and treacherous Californian hillside in the Sierra Nevada valleys. However, as those who are drawn into his grand design soon discover, Barocco is also a man with a shadowy past; and the house is not destined to be a place where he will find peace but, rather, a catalyst for passion, violence, and death. First published in 1956, The Self-Enchanted was David Stacton's third novel. 'A Gothic extravaganza... [Stacton] seems to participate with so much fervour in the fantasies he describes.' They said I was a sailor, now. But this was my first time on the ocean. And I was going to war... By 1942 most of Europe was under the heel of the Nazis. Only the United Kingdom remained free to oppose them. Knowing Britain needed supplies from overseas, the German navy built a large fleet of U-boats to hunt merchant ships. It was up to Canada to protect all shipping from North America to Britain. Corvettes like HMCS Sackville were crewed by young men from across Canada, and from all walks of life. The Battle of the Atlantic (1939-1945), the longest of the Second World War, was Canada's battle, and the outcome sealed Hitler's fate. Following twelve-year-old Wally as he leaves the family farm on the prairies to pursue a daring career in the navy--leaving love interest Winnie behind--this striking graphic novel is a high-stakes adventure, a love story, and an important historical lesson. Features meticulously detailed black and white drawings, an illustrated diagram of the Sackville, information on wartime propaganda, glossary, and an illustrated map.

Sailing Upwind is more than just another memoir of a distinguished former naval officer‘s highly diverse career. This book by Admiral James “Sandy” Winnefeld is also intended to offer useful reflections regarding how he accepted and managed risk along the way, as well as a concise description of the qualities one must develop to become a successful leader. Winnefeld began his career as an F-14 fighter pilot and TOPGUN instructor, commanded an aircraft carrier, and then served in a variety of flag officer billets on the way to becoming the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This book describes in an entertaining and humble manner how that journey unfolded and the lessons he attaches to it. The reader learns what it is like to become a Navy fighter pilot, and to fly, fight, and takeoff and land from an aircraft carrier – including a harrowing description of ejecting from an F-14 at night far from land. Winnefeld describes the culture of excellence at the real TOPGUN and the Navy's nuclear propulsion program. He recounts how he learned to lead the men and women who operate at every level of Navy operational command, from squadron to ship to fleet. Finally, the author presents a behind-the-scenes look at how decisions are made at the highest levels of government regarding whether and how those forces will be used, and how they are acquired. In the process, Winnefeld provides descriptions of how, by challenging existing assumptions and processes and through relentless creativity, he was able to lead change. He reflects on how the risk associated with such changes should be accepted and managed. The title Sailing Upwind—in which a sailboat must be operated against a prevailing force field to make progress in the right direction—is an apt metaphor for the bent for pushing against the system Winnefeld describes throughout the book.
