The essays in this volume were originally presented at a workshop held at the University of Calgary on August 1–5, 1977 and sponsored by the Calgary Institute for the Humanities. The phrase “the new land” underwent careful scrutiny and reassessment during the course of the conference, and the insights that resulted from the readings and discussions were of considerable value to participants and observers alike. Chronologically and thematically the essays cover a wide range: from La Nouvelle France as seen by the early missionaries and by the French Romantic writer Chateaubriand to variations on the new land theme in present-day Qußbec; from the Prairies as seen by an early homesteader-novelist from France, Constantin-Weyer, to the Manitoba of Gabrielle Roy, which in turn is contrasted to the Nebraska of Willa Cather; from a historical recreation of the Saskatchewan landscape and history by a gifted contemporary novelist Rudy Wiebe, to a paradisal celebration of British Columbia reflected in the later works of Malcolm Lowry. What emerged from all of this, among other things, was the articulation of a mythology about the new land that was far more complex and expansive than the one derived originally through an old–world perspective.

This volume offers challenging assessments of the reconfigurations that have shaped Anglophone and Francophone Canadian literatures in the last decades of the twentieth century. Focusing on the pursuit of an ever-elusive «Canadianness» in literary texts, it documents the astonishing range of Canadian diasporic identities that have recently emerged in the Canadian literary landscape. The contributors to this volume boldly transgress the widely held critical assumptions of postcolonialism in their examination of the literary representations of contemporary Canada's many «Others». Ce volume rassemble nombre d'analyses innovatrices des reconfigurations qui ont caractérisé les littératures canadiennes anglophones et francophones durant les dernières décennies du vingtième siècle. Tout en se concentrant sur la quête de l'insaisissable «Canadianité» en littérature, l'ouvrage démontre l'étonnante diversité des identités diasporiques qui ont récemment émergé dans le paysage littéraire canadien. Les contributeurs de ce volume transgressent audacieusement les certitudes généralement acquises du postcolonialisme afin de mieux décrire les représentations littéraires des nombreux «Autres» du Canada actuel.

As a result of migration, more than 25% of Romanian L1 speakers live outside of Romania and Moldova - mostly in other European countries, but also in America and Australia. In the meantime, many second-generation speakers have become part of this group. The situation has resulted in various different constellations of language contact, both within the group of Romance languages and amongst typologically different and unrelated languages. Despite the fact that these contact scenarios present a wide range of research perspectives, there have been hardly any studies on Romanian as a language of migrants up until now. The volume Romanian in the Context of Migration brings together contributions on the Romanian language in Europe and in North America in the context of current migration linguistics. It includes studies on Romanian in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain and on the Romanian of those who return to Romania and Moldova. Über 25 % der Sprecher mit Rumänisch als L1 leben heute - infolge der Migration - außerhalb von Rumänien und der Republik Moldau, zumeist in anderen Ländern Europas, aber auch in Amerika und Australien. Inzwischen sind zahlreiche Vertreter der 2. Generation hinzugekommen. Aus dieser Situation ergeben sich unterschiedliche Konstellationen von Sprachkontakt, sowohl innerromanisch als auch mit typologisch verschiedenen und nicht verwandten Sprachen. All diese Kontaktszenarien eröffnen vielfältige Forschungsperspektiven. Dennoch gibt es bislang kaum Untersuchungen zum Rumänischen als Sprache von Migrantinnen und Migranten. Der Sammelband Romanian in the Context of Migration vereint Beiträge zum Rumänischen in Europa und Nordamerika im Kontext der aktuellen Migrationslinguistik. Er umfasst Studien zum Rumänischen in Deutschland, Frankreich, Italien, Kanada, Portugal, Slowenien und Spanien und zum Rumänischen der Rückkehrer.

The three concepts mentioned in the title of this volume imply the contact between two or more literary phenomena; they are based on similarities that are related to a form of ‘travelling’ and imitation or adaptation of entire texts, genres, forms or contents. Transfer comprises all sorts of ‘travelling’, with translation as a major instrument of transferring literature across linguistic and cultural barriers. Transfer aims at the process of communication, starting with the source product and its cultural context and then highlighting the mediation by certain agents and institutions to end up with inclusion in the target culture. Reception lays its focus on the receiving culture, especially on critcism, reading, and interpretation. Translation, therefore, forms a major factor in reception with the general aim of reception studies being to reveal the wide spectrum of interpretations each text offers. Moreover, translations are the prime instrument in the distribution of literature across linguistic and cultural borders; thus, they pave the way for gaining prestige in the world of literature. The thirty-eight papers included in this volume and dedicated to research in this area were previously read at the ICLA conference 2016 in Vienna. They are ample proof that the field remains at the center of interest in Comparative Literature.
