Rosemarie Jarski, known for her many books highlighting the wit of the ages, offers up the perfect how-to guide, illuminating the darkest corner of the household with all those things our mothers never taught us. Domestic Bliss is Rosemarie's own unique and characteristically witty handbook that fills the gap left by the generation before us. The essential skills of how to keep your house from falling down around your ears are not taught in school, and our parents were so busy earning a living they had no time to pass on the wisdom the world sees as 'common sense'. Well, common sense is not so common as is commonly supposed. This hands-on, down-to-earth guide focuses on those household problems and challenges you are most likely to encounter in real life: how to cure a dripping tap, combat condensation, and unblock a sink. You'll also get to grips with a power drill, a plumb line, and a paintbrush. And find the answers to Life's little frustrations, like how to remove sticky labels, open supermarket plastic bags, and fit a duvet-cover onto a duvet without being swallowed. Many home references tell you how to do something, without telling you why. Rosemarie, though, asks 'What is the point of a detailed explanation of how to bleed a radiator if you have no idea why it's necessary?' This guide is different because it takes the time to tell you why a particular technique is needed or beneficial, giving you the background and Explaining the point of it all. Domestic Bliss is also different because it's a manual for all ages and sexes. We all have laundry to sort, stains to remove, dishes to wash, and heaven knows the essential techniques don't differ whether it's your boxer shorts or his. With clear and mercifully jargon-free directions, Ms Jarski offers more than tips and nudges, holding our hand through the process of putting up drywall, shining our shoes, braiding our hair and creating a beautiful table for a dinner party. Step-by step instructions are enhanced, wherever necessary, by line drawings, so you can see at a glance what to do. Rosemarie's indispensable manual helps us with: Getting Organized, Home Laundry, Sewing, Cleaning, Interior Design, Painting & Decorating, Home Matters, D.I.Y, Food & Drink, Style & Grooming, Scarves & Ties, Home Office, Leisure Time, House Plants & Flowers, Entertaining, Gifts & Wrapping, Christmas, Packing a Suitcase, Conversion Charts. Domestic Bliss is your guide to daily living, offering a thorough grounding in the practical skills everyone should know how to do. The aim is to demystify and simplify. Where other household manuals leave you feeling daunted and inadequate, this guide instills you with the confidence and enthusiasm to get stuck in and have a go as you sweep, shine, and stitch your way towards Domestic Bliss.

The Rebel Housewife Rules is a whole new set of rules for today's housewives. The book contains 38 short chapters--four pages each--because that is about all that a mom can read locked in the bathroom with a three-year-old while the dog vomits outside the door. Each chapter: Exposes a myth about being a housewife: "Compared to an outside career, taking care of a house and family--and myself--will be a breeze." Reveals the reality behind the myth: "My husband comes home to a disheveled wife, a disaster of a house, and laundry all over the stairs." Lays down a new rule: "Your day will never go as planned." And offers a rule Rx, a prescription for real domestic happiness: "Be proud of your most important accomplishments every day." Following the often hilarious adventures and advice of Rebel Housewives Sherri Caldwell and Vicki Todd, readers learn to be themselves, get what they want, and love in new and deeper ways. Sherri and Vicki share their hard-won wisdom in this "survivors' guide" to momhood, housecleaning, budgets, self-care, and love after kids and babies. Bottom line? Happiness is more important than passing the white-glove test. In The Rebel Housewife Rules, the recently engaged, new brides, or long-married wives find the courage to live by the greatest housewife rule of all: "Live, Love, and Laugh, one day at a time, baby."

Unless the feisty brunette met him years before he’d perfected his cool demeanor. Unless she carved a spot out of his heart that never fully healed. Our first meeting kick started my heart. Fourteen years later, our reunion was less heart and more kick. Turns out Quinn is just as hot and bothered to see me as I am her and I have the head injury to prove it.

When American architects, designers, and cultural institutions converted wartime strategies to new ends, the aggressive promotion of postwar domestic bliss became another kind of weapon. In the years immediately following World War II, America embraced modern architecture—not as something imported from Europe, but as an entirely new mode of operation, with original and captivating designs made in the USA. In Domesticity at War, Beatriz Colomina shows how postwar American architecture adapted the techniques and materials that were developed for military applications to domestic use. Just as manufacturers were turning wartime industry to peacetime productivity—going from missiles to washing machines—American architects and cultural institutions were, in Buckminster Fuller's words, turning "weaponry into livingry."This new form of domesticity itself turned out to be a powerful weapon. Images of American domestic bliss—suburban homes, manicured lawns, kitchen accessories—went around the world as an effective propaganda campaign. Cold War anxieties were masked by endlessly repeated images of a picture-perfect domestic environment. Even the popular conception of the architect became domesticated, changing from that of an austere modernist to a plaid-shirt wearing homebody. Colomina examines, with interlocking case studies and an army of images, the embattled and obsessive domesticity of postwar America. She reports on, among other things, MOMA's exhibition of a Dymaxion Deployment Unit (DDU), a corrugated steel house suitable for use as a bomb shelter, barracks, or housing; Charles and Ray Eames's vigorous domestic life and their idea of architecture as a flexible stage for the theatrical spectacle of everyday life; and the American lawn as patriotic site and inalienable right.Domesticity at War itself has a distinctive architecture. Housed within the case are two units: one book of text, and one book of illustrations—most of them in color, including advertisements, newspaper and magazine articles, architectural photographs, and more.
