Divine Substitution is an investigation of ancient conceptualizations of divine presence. Specifically, this thesis investigates the possibility that the ancient Mesopotamian conceptualization of cultic and royal statues, thought to actually manifest the presence of gods and kings, can likewise be found in ancient Israel. Despite the overly pessimistic view of the later biblical authors, material objects were almost certainly believed to extend and manifest the presence of God in pre-exilic Israel (e.g., standing stones). Likewise, the later polemics against such cultic concepts demonstrate Israel's familiarity with this type of conceptualization. These polemics engaged in the rhetoric of mutilation and destruction of cultic representations, the erasure and re-inscription of divine names, and the rhetorical deconstruction of the specific Mesopotamian rituals thought to transform the dead statue into a living god. Though the biblical reflection of these concepts is more often found in the negative commentary regarding "foreign" cultic practices, S. Herring demonstrates that these opinions were not universally held. At least three biblical texts (Gen 1:26f.; Ex 34:29-34; and Ezek 36-37) portray the conceptualization that material images could manifest the divine presence in positive terms. Yet, these positive attestations were limited to a certain type of material image – humans.

Christians agree that they are saved through the death and resurrection of Christ. But how is the atonement achieved in these events? This book offers an introduction to the doctrine of the atonement focused on the unity and diversity of the work of Christ. Johnson reorients current patterns of thought concerning Christ's work by giving the reader a unifying vision of the immensely rich and diverse doctrine of the atonement, offering a sampling of its treasures, and cultivating the desire to further understand and apply these riches to everyday life. Where introductions to the atonement typically favor one aspect of the work of Christ, or work with a set number of themes, aspects or theories, this book takes the opposite approach, developing the foundation for the multi-faceted nature of Christ's work within the being of God himself. It offers a grand unifying vision of Christ's manifold work. Specific elaborations of different theories of the atonement, biblical themes, and the work of different theologians find their place within this larger rubric.

In this book Peter Carnley examines the logical connection between the doctrine of the Trinity and the doctrine of redemption. In the companion volume to this, Arius on Carillon Avenue, contemporary expressions of belief in the “eternal functional subordination” of the Son to the Father were carefully discussed and found wanting when measured against the norms of orthodox trinitarian belief. This book examines the repercussions of this defective “trinitarian subordinationism” in relation to recent attempts to defend the “penal substitutionary theory” of the Atonement, which in turn is also found to fall short of trinitarian norms. As an alternative a less theoretical and speculative “incorporative” or “participative” theology of redemption is proposed.

God required the price to remove his anger against the humankind who offended him. He wanted to see in that price a death, with bloodshed as evidence, demonstrating a sacrifice for the forgiveness of the sinners. For God, all sinners had to die. So, when Jesus died, the corpse of Jesus represented the corpse of all sinners. God was satisfied when he saw the corpse of Jesus. God put in his mind that he had killed all mankind. The punishment was then given, and the problem between him and the humankind was resolved. Jesus Christs corpse has ability to be the price required by God. His blood as a killed sacrifice is the evidence of the death required by God. The blood of animals was not needed in the mankinds salvation process. The blood required by God was to be a mankinds blood. This blood had to come from the death of a perfect person, perfect as God himself. The problem was only to be solved by the blood of God himself, because only God is perfect. But God could only die by taking human form, that is why the Second Person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ, descent to earth to die in the place of humankind, through an agonizing death at the cross of Golgotha, and therefore he paid the price required by God. Then, God died as self-substitution for men. He was God-man. In beliefs of different world religions, we cant find any other god who died for people. Only God, in whom Christians believe in, died for humankind, and he had risen. He is alive. Only the Faith in God propitiated for sinners is True Faith, and other beliefs are false faith.
