Over the past century or more, the genres of fantasy, horror, and supernatural fiction have increasingly expanded beyond literature and into an array of media—film, television, comic books, and art. Many of the leading figures in the field engage in multimedia enterprises that allow their work to reach a much wider public than the mere readers of books. In Disorders of Magnitude: A Survey of Dark Fantasy, Jason V Brock analyzes the intersection of literature, media, and genre fiction in essays, reviews, and pioneering interviews. Beginning with the pulp magazines of the 1920s, Brock studies such dynamic figures as H. P. Lovecraft, Forrest J Ackerman, Harlan Ellison, and the Southern California writers known collectively as “The Group”—Ray Bradbury, Charles Beaumont, Richard Matheson, Rod Serling, and William F. Nolan. This collection also includes filmmakers Roger Corman, George Romero, and Dan O’Bannon, and such fantasy artists as H. R. Giger. Graced with dozens of photographs from the author’s personal collection, this wide-ranging study offers a kaleidoscopic look at the multifarious ways in which fantasy, horror, and the supernatural have permeated our culture. Brock—himself a fiction writer, critic, and filmmaker—concludes the book with touching eulogies to the recently deceased Ray Bradbury and Ray Harryhausen. Highlighting so many figures essential to the understanding of fantasy and horror, Disorders of Magnitude will appeal to fans of these fiction genres around the world.

The Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale--Children and Adolescents (BDEFS-CA) is an empirically based tool for evaluating clinically significant dimensions of child and adolescent executive functioning. Evidence indicates that the BDEFS-CA is far more predictive of impairments in daily life activities than more time-consuming and costly traditional EF tests. The BDEFS-CA offers an ecologically valid snapshot of the capacities involved in time management, organization and problem solving, self-restraint, self-motivation, and self-regulation of emotions. Two parent-report forms are included: a long form (10-15 minutes) and a short form (3-5 minutes). There is also a short clinical interview form based on the short-form rating scale, for use in unusual circumstances where a parent is unable to complete a rating scale. Special features include an ADHD risk index in the long form. Complete instructions for scoring and interpreting the scale are provided. QUICK VIEW What does it do?: Provides an ecologically valid assessment of executive functioning deficits in daily life activities. Age Range: 6-17 Administration Time: Long Form: 10-15 minutes. The papers in this volume, written by authors experienced in intelligibility issues in speech pathology and related fields, describe the basic dimensions by which speech intelligibility can and must be understood. The dimensions are auditory perceptual, linguistic, acoustic and physiologic. These, in turn, are applied to the fundamental problems of definition and theory, measurement and clinical management. Only relatively recently has there been significant progress in formal intelligibility assessment and few, if any books have been published on intelligibility concerns in speech pathology. It is hoped that this book represents the topic of intelligibility in a way that will encourage further invention in research and clinical efforts relating to this essential aspect of speech and language performance.
