Halloween is one of those holidays with origins that date back to ancient times. It is called All Hallows Eve in the English language, the same as the name of the Christian holiday of All Saints' Day. Both names have a common root in Celtic history. All Hallows Eve is the Celtic name for Halloween and All Saints' Day is the Christian name. Both are derived from Latin and have multiple meanings that may mean all evening, all day or just the evening. Halloween is one of those holidays with a rich history that makes it fun for children and adults alike. When most people think of Halloween they think of trick or treating, but the history of Halloween goes far beyond that. Halloween trivia will show that this popular holiday has roots in many cultures around the world. The name Halloween itself comes from the English language meaning All Hallows' Night. This popular name for Halloween is actually a short form of All Hallows' Eve. Trick-or-treating is one of the major activities that happen on Halloween. This is the act of handing out candy and other sweets to children door-to-door on Halloween. The tradition of trick-or-treating began in many towns and cities around the United States. As the United States became a country many people found themselves traveling longer distances to visit their family and friends. This made traveling a popular holiday for many Americans. It was soon replaced by the new holiday of trick-or-treating which began in the middle of the 19th century. Many towns and cities throughout the United States have their own traditions and customs associated with Halloween. For example in some areas on Halloween people wear ghost costumes, go door-to-door wearing ghost costumes, and use Halloween as an excuse to go shopping. These people also carry cans of pennies and pumpkins which they then use to buy food for the poor during the course of the evening. Many people also decorate their homes and yards with orange, black, and red colors which are traditional halloween colors. In the United States there is another type of holiday that is related to Halloween. This popular holiday known as Fat Tuesday is observed in several states including Alabama, Texas, Georgia, and Ohio. The day on which Fat Tuesday occurs is considered to be the last day for selling candy by people dressed as zombies and skeletons.
