In the first edition of this book, simple proofs of the Atiyah-Singer Index Theorem for Dirac operators on compact Riemannian manifolds and its generalizations (due to the authors and J.-M. Bismut) were presented, using an explicit geometric construction of the heat kernel of a generalized Dirac operator; the new edition makes this popular book available to students and researchers in an attractive paperback.

Boundary problems constitute an essential field of common mathematical interest, they lie in the center of research activities both in analysis and geometry. This book encompasses material from both disciplines, and focuses on their interactions which are particularly apparent in this field. Moreover, the survey style of the contributions makes the topics accessible to a broad audience with a background in analysis or geometry, and enables the reader to get a quick overview.

This book presents contributions from two workshops in algebraic and analytic microlocal analysis that took place in 2012 and 2013 at Northwestern University. Featured papers expand on mini-courses and talks ranging from foundational material to advanced research-level papers, and new applications in symplectic geometry, mathematical physics, partial differential equations, and complex analysis are discussed in detail. Topics include Procesi bundles and symplectic reflection algebras, microlocal condition for non-displaceability, polarized complex manifolds, nodal sets of Laplace eigenfunctions, geodesics in the space of Kӓhler metrics, and partial Bergman kernels. This volume is a valuable resource for graduate students and researchers in mathematics interested in understanding microlocal analysis and learning about recent research in the area.

In recent years, increasingly complex methods have been brought into play in the treatment of geometric and topological problems for partial differential operators on manifolds. This collection of papers, resulting from a Workshop on Spectral Geometry of Manifolds with Boundary and Decomposition of Manifolds, provides a broad picture of these methods with new results. Subjects in the book cover a wide variety of topics, from recent advances in index theory and the more general boundary, to applications of those invariants in geometry, topology, and physics. Papers are grouped into four parts: Part I gives an overview of the subject from various points of view. Part II deals with spectral invariants, such as geometric and topological questions. Part IV deals specifically with problems on manifolds with singularities. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in spectral problems in geometry.

When visiting M.I.T. for two weeks in October 1994, Victor Guillemin made me enthusiastic about a problem in symplectic geometry which involved the use of the so-called spin-c Dirac operator. Back in Berkeley, where I had l spent a sabbatical semester , I tried to understand the basic facts about this operator: its definition, the main theorems about it, and their proofs. This book is an outgrowth of the notes in which I worked this out. For me this was a great learning experience because of the many beautiful mathematical structures which are involved. I thank the Editorial Board of Birkhauser, especially Haim Brezis, for sug gesting the publication of these notes as a book. I am also very grateful for the suggestions by the referees, which have led to substantial improvements in the presentation. Finally I would like to express special thanks to Ann Kostant for her help and her prodding me, in her charming way, into the right direction. J.J. Duistermaat Utrecht, October 16, 1995.
