"The information contained within this book will show that although the development and selection of instructional materials is generally done towards the end of the instructional design process, it must be viewed in a more inclusive way in that the visuals themselves may affect many other components of the educational design"--Provided by publisher.

This textbook considers and addresses the design of online learning objects, electronic textbooks, short courses, long courses, MOOC courses, and other types of contents for open sharing. It also considers the design of online mediated communities to enhance such learning. The “openness” may be open-access, and/or it may even be open-source. The learning may range from self-directed and automated to AI robot-led to instructor-led. The main concept of this work is that design learning for open sharing, requires different considerations than when designing for closed and proprietary contexts. Open sharing of learning contents requires a different sense of laws (intellectual property, learner privacy, pedagogical strategies, technologies, media, and others). It requires different considerations of learner diversity and inclusion. It requires geographical, cultural, and linguistic considerations that are not as present in more localized designs. The open sharing aspect also has effects on learner performance tracking (assessments) and learner feedback. This textbook targets students, both undergraduate and graduate in computer science, education and other related fields. Also, professionals in this field managing online systems would find this book helpful.

Mathematics is, by its very nature, an abstract discipline. However, many students learn best by thinking in terms of tangible constructs. Enhancing Mathematics Understanding through Visualization: The Role of Dynamical Software brings these conflicting viewpoints together by offering visual representations as a method of mathematics instruction. The book explores the role of technology in providing access to multiple representations of concepts, using software applications to create a rich environment in which a student’s understanding of mathematical concepts can flourish. Both students and instructors of mathematics at the university level will use this book to implement various novel techniques for the delivery of mathematical concepts in their classrooms. This book is part of the Research Essential collection.

Engagement is trendy. Although paired most often with community, diverse invocations of engagement have gained cache, capturing longstanding shifts toward new practices of knowledge making that both reflect and facilitate multiple ways of being an academic. Engagement functions as a gloss for these shifts—addressing more expansive understandings of where, how, and with whom we research, teach, and partner. This book examines these shifts, locating them within socio-economic trends within and beyond the higher educational landscape, with particular focus on how they have been enacted within the diverse subfields of writing studies. In so doing, this book provides concrete models for enacting these new responsive practices, thereby encouraging scholars to examine how they can facilitate writing for social action through taking positions, building relationships, and crossing boundaries.
