This book provides new information to understand the relationship between urban development and environmental change to the reader. How to create a sustainable and livable urban environment and realize the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN) is one of the biggest challenges in this century, even in the next centuries. The covered subject areas of this book aim at finding a way to push SDGs forward by collecting the related knowledge between urban development and its environmental implication. Specifically, the book focuses on UN SDGs 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure), 11 (sustainable cities and communities), and 13 (climate action). Regarding the SDGs 9, this book assesses urban population mobility, urban ecosystem services, and green infrastructure to address climate change in cities. Regarding the SDGs 11, this book explores the sustainability of urban landscape change associated with urbanization based on a multi-scale perspective. Regarding the SDGs 13, this book explores the issues affecting the development of healthy cities in the context of climate change and possible ways to address them. This book focuses on newer fields related to various forms of urbanization and urban climate. Under different urbanization and development scenarios, the city and built environment are facing new challenges and become a major concern. Better understandings of related physical laws and sustainable technologies are badly needed. This book is a good reference to urban planners, city officials, citizens who are concerned about the city environment, and policymakers, as well as students studying urban structure and environment.

This book introduces the latest thinking on the use of Big Data in the context of urban systems, including research and insights on human behavior, urban dynamics, resource use, sustainability and spatial disparities, where it promises improved planning, management and governance in the urban sectors (e.g., transportation, energy, smart cities, crime, housing, urban and regional economies, public health, public engagement, urban governance and political systems), as well as Big Data’s utility in decision-making, and development of indicators to monitor economic and social activity, and for urban sustainability, transparency, livability, social inclusion, place-making, accessibility and resilience.

ABSTRACT: This dissertation extends research that seeks a better understanding of the complex relationships between humans and the urban environment by focusing on one of the more pervasive topics in recent human-environment studies- the investigation and analysis of the connections between transportation and land-use. Currently, the multitude of environmental, economic, and social-welfare concerns incumbent to a society dependent on the automobile have compounded the need to further understand and develop models of these connections. By conceptualizing the urban environment as the locations of housing and the locations of jobs, or urban structure, this dissertation builds upon previous research that utilizes urban commuting to explore connections between transportation and land-use in US metropolitan regions. Motivated by the prospects of providing new insights into the relationship between commuting, sprawl, sustainability and the urban structure; this dissertation develops a methodology to assess and evaluate changes to the urban structure over time by synthesizing elements from both the planning and geographic literatures. The Model of Urban Structure and Evaluation of Change (MUSEC) presented in chapter 6 proposes that for a given city or region, changes to the urban structure can be modeled using homogenous data to model the urban structure and evaluated using the commuting carrying capacity to assess the changes. To better support those assumptions, two analytical chapters are presented exploring the role of homogenous data in commute studies (chapter 4) and the role of the commuting carrying capacity in urban structure assessment (chapter 5). The ability to assess urban structure changes will help broaden the understanding of the transportation/land-use connection and can provide planners, government officials, and geographers' knowledge to address prevalent urban issues such as sprawl and sustainable development.

On 2 June 2022 in Stockholm, an UN-backed coalition of 1,000 stakeholders from over 100 countries launched an Action Plan to steer digitalization towards accelerating environmentally and socially sustainable development. The Coalition for Digital Environmental Sustainability aims to help reorient and prioritize the application of digital technologies to meet the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. Inspired by this Agenda, we have directed our research interest toward the search for approaches to sustainable digital transformation for the environment.
