A critique of the American obsession with diversity argues that we are ignoring the ever-widening economic divide in American society, that diversity has created a false notion of social justice, and that we need to emphasize equality over diversity.

The whole world is talking about globalisation and there are so many versions of it that one might as well not talk about it at all. The word has permeated all areas of the public sphere and can have negative or positive connotations, depending on the context of relevant discourse. In education, globalisation is associated with mobility of staff and students, with internationalization of degrees, course content, research, and with global career opportunities for university graduates. High numbers of international students are perceived as an asset to universities around the world, in economical, political, and cultural terms. One of the advantages for all students, domestic and international, is the opportunity to meet people from across the globe and to exchange views and learning styles as well as establishing links for future professional work. Universities advertise that graduates will leave their Alma Mater as well rounded, interculturally competent people who are ready to be employed in international contexts. This book sets out to explore what internationalization in education really looks like. In the case study of an Australian university, the author investigates the opinions of staff and students in terms of what intercultural competence actually means, how it can be achieved and enhanced and if it should be measured. This study provides an insight into practical approaches towards internationalization and points out where more support is needed to successfully implement and foster cultural intelligence in educational settings. The case study is embedded in discussions about multiculturalism in Australia and elsewhere, the importance of foreign languages as part of intercultural competence and the notion of friendship. This book will appeal to academics and researchers who are interested in cultural intelligence/intercultural competence and how it can be supported in educational settings, as well as to everyone who is working in fields where people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds come together – which is just about everywhere in the world.

Foodie and sometimes sleuth Chloe Carter smells something fishy when a waitress from a popular new Boston restaurant turns up dead in a seafood delivery truck Having an executive chef boyfriend guarantees Chloe Carter the best table at Simmer, Boston’s hottest new restaurant, any night of the week. But the Back Bay foodie’s incredible comped dinners are usually enjoyed without Josh, whose pressure-cooker job has taken over his life. The same can’t be said of Leandra, the pretty blond Simmer server whose body was just found in a seafood delivery truck. The truck belongs to Owen, the fiancé of Chloe’s best friend, Adrianna. And Owen has no alibi for the night Leandra was strangled with her apron strings and dumped in his truck. But Chloe is sure he didn’t do it. There are plenty of other people with motive to off the unpleasant waitress, starting with Leandra’s lover—and Simmer’s owner—Gavin Seymour. And now some expensive cooking equipment is missing, including a mandolin slicer, an eight-inch chinois, and Josh’s favorite knife. If Chloe isn’t careful while trying to clear Owen’s name, the amateur sleuth could be next to sleep with the fishes! This ebook features mouth-watering recipes sure to satisfy more than just your appetite for crime. Turn Up the Heat is the 3rd book in the Gourmet Girl Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Welcome to Identity Safe Classrooms! In identity safe classrooms, students facing negative stereotypes or viewed as different are "seen," accepted, and valued for who and what they are. Their identity is embraced as an asset not a barrier for school success. Identity safety is a research-based set of practices that counter the harmful effects of stereotype threat and allow our students to reach their full capacity for learning, foster positive relationships, and better appreciate the full spectrum of human differences. The second of a two-volume set, Identity Safe Classrooms, Grades 6-12, is a call for educators to come together and realize a vision of schools as transformative places of opportunity and equity for all students. Inside you’ll find: Design principles for promoting belonging and a welcoming classroom environment Compelling evidence from identity safety research on ways to mitigate stereotype threat along with counter-narratives that challenge societal biases about gender, race, and other differences Pragmatic strategies for student-centered teaching, including trauma-informed practices, that hold high expectations and validate each student’s background as a resource for learning Vignettes with concrete examples and try-it-out activities and prompts for self-reflection Devour Identity Safe Classrooms, adopt its practices, and soon enough you’ll inspire in all of your students a greater sense of empathy and agency in their educational experiences. "Dr. Becki Cohn-Vargas along with Alexandrea Creer Kahn and Amy Epstein show us the intersections between adolescent identity development, racial identity development, and social-emotional development so we know how to use the diversity in classrooms as our strength." -Zaretta Hammond, Author of Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain "Identity Safe Classrooms should be in the hands of every educator who walks into a school. It′s clear and accessible, grounded in research, thought-provoking and engaging, and actionable, and fills a crucial gap in our resources for creating just and liberated schools." -Elena Aguilar, Author of The Art of Coaching "The authors have done an excellent job showing how an identity safe classroom integrates the growth mindset in a secondary school. When students feel accepted and valued, when they feel safe learning from mistakes and encouraged to continually grow as learners, they can reach their highest potential." -Carol Dweck, Stanford University
