Die Geschichte der georgischen Sprache ist nicht nur von rein linguistischem oder philologischem Interesse, sondern sie wirft auch das Problem der spezifischen Bedeutung der "Volkssprache" im ostlichen Christentum und des historischen Verhaltnisses der Georgier zu ihrer Sprache auf: In welchem kulturellen, religiosen und politischen Kontext entwickelte sich die georgische Schriftsprache?
