The basis for this additional volume are the three volumes of the handbooks Dictionaries. An International Encyclopedia of Lexicography (HSK 5.1–5.3), published between 1989 and 1991. An updating has been perceived as an important desideratum for a considerable time. In the present Supplementary Volume the premises and subjects of HSK 5.1–5.3 are complemented by new articles that take account of the practice-internal and theoretical developments of the last 15 years. Special attention has been given to the following topics: the status and function of lexicographic reference works, the history of lexicography, the theory of lexicography, lexicographic processes, lexicographic training and lexicographic institutions, new metalexicographic methods, electronic and, especially, computer-assisted lexicography.

This stimulating new book, as the premier work introducing bilingual lexicography from a communicative perspective, is launched to represent original thinking and innovative theorization in the field of bilingual lexicography. It treats the bilingual dictionary as a system of intercultural communication and bilingual dictionary making as a dynamic process realized by sets of choices, characterizing the overall nature of the dictionary. It examines the dictionary and dictionary making by using a model of lexicography which stresses the three-way relationship of compiler, dictionary context and user and incorporates them into a unified coherent framework. Throughout the study, special focus is on English and Chinese bilingual lexicography. Foreign language learners often use electronic dictionaries or other information from the Internet to solve language problems. However, they seem to have great difficulty using dictionaries and online resources appropriately, profitably and successfully. Their teachers also seem unfamiliar with the current dictionary landscape and sometimes insist on using a single (monolingual) print dictionary in class. As a result, dictionaries are often banned from the classroom altogether. However, in today's digital, global and multilingual world, appropriate competence in the use of dictionaries is an essential communicative strategy. Dictionary didactics should thus be integrated into foreign language teaching. Against this background, the contributions in this volume discuss how dictionary use can be promoted and integrated into the classroom. They also consider how modern lexical resources and dictionaries should be designed to support learners.
