Este diccionario intenta mejorar el entendimiento entre los múltiples agentesque intervienen en el transporte ferroviario. Para ello en este diccionario serecogen 10.000 términos ferroviarios definidos en Español, con su traducciónal alemán, francés, inglés, italiano y portugués. Para la elaboración de estaobra se ha procedido a amplias consultas con administraciones ferroviarias yexpertos de Alemania, Francia, Inglaterra, Italia y Portugal.

Este diccionario pretende servir de ayuda para la comprensión de la nueva terminología creada como consecuencia del progreso tecnológico en este medio de transporte universal. Aspira además a ser una fuente de consulta razonablemente útil para técnicos, traductores y personas que se ocupen de temas ferroviarios. La obra inicia su génesis en el Diccionario Politécnico de Ferrocarriles Alemán-Español editado en 1993, con 25.000 entradas, y en el Diccionario de Términos Ferroviarios. Se ha procurado aprovechar la riqueza lingüística de este país (España) traduciendo las entradas al catalán, al euskera y al gallego, y además, por la proyección internacional de la temática, se ha incluido la traducción al alemán, el francés y el inglés, principales idiomas extranjeros que generan documentación técnica relacionada con el ferrocarril. A la hora de seleccionar los términos de este diccionario se ha puesto el acento en la tecnología moderna, especialmente en la alta velocidad, la conducción automática de trenes y la logística del transporte, sin olvidar los conceptos fundamentales de mecánica, electricidad y electrónica vinculados al tren.
