Excerpt from Dialogues on Metaphysics and on Religion Besides containing the best exposition Malebranche has left us of his philosophical system, the Entretiens sur la M etaphysique form one of the most exquisitely written of philosophical books in any language. A translation cannot, of course, be e'xpected to retain either the subtle elegance or all the delicate shades of meaning that delight a reader of the original. But Mr. Ginsberg has contrived, I think, to give the English reader a faithful render ing of the author's thought, and it is matter for congratulation that a work of so much significance in the history of speculation should at length have found a scholar willing to undertake the labour of translating it into our tongue. Excerpt from Religion a Dialogue, and Other Essays As a third edition of this little volume is called for, I have taken the opportunity of adding two more Essays: the brief dialogue on The Failure of Philosophy, and some Observa tions on The Metaphysics of Fine Art. The latter Essay Is a rendering of such portions of a chapter in the original, entitled Zur Metaphysik des Schema, as appear to be gene rally interesting and easily intelligible. The chief statement of Schopenhauer's view of Art is to be found in his large work; but as he gives a short essay in his Parerga, I have thought it well to include it in this selection. Excerpt from An Introduction Dialogues of Plato I cannot but fear that in some places opinions have been here expressed in too decided' a tone; which, however, was naturally suggested by the authoritative character of a Review. But I should deeply regret, if any thing I wrote tended to encourage in young students a habit of presumptuous dogmatism, or of pronouncing too positively, except where the state ments put forward are declarations of a higher and competent authority. In this case, to hesitate and falter is to abandon our first duty, both as men and as Christians, of witnessing boldly to the truth. As these remarks have already been made the subject of various misconceptions and censures on their first appearance, I may be permitted to say, that in publishing them I had no wish to supersede religion by metaphysics, or Christianity by Plato nism, or the Church of England by Popery. I have endeavoured to take every opportunity of warning the young reader against removing philosophy from its proper place of subordination to Revelation and the Church; and to distinguish carefully between that Catholicism which is essential to Christianity, and of which the Church of England makes its boast, and Popery, which in its real nature is most un catholic, and little but the spirit of Dissent under the form of a Church. Excerpt from The Religious Feeling: A Study for Faith The substance of it first formed itself in the author's mind during a season of quiet study of modern German thought, and he has since found the reasoning, which then enabled his own faith to survive, useful in conversation with friends whose scientific studies had both brought them into unwilling doubts concerning those spiritual truths which give to life its real value, and, at the same time, thrown the prev alent proofs of religion out of all relation to their habits of mind.
