On the 15th of June 1921, during his stay in Baden-Baden, Germany, British novelist D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) encountered the German physicist Albert Einstein (1879-1955). Lawrence read an English translation of Relativity: The Special and General Theory, which had been published in the previous year. The very next day he wrote: “Einstein isn’t so metaphysically marvellous, but I like him for taking out the pin which fixed down our fluttering little physical universe” (4L 37). Lawrence’s first response to Einstein is ambivalent, for his reading of works by Victorian relativists such as Charles Darwin, T. H. Huxley, William James, Herbert Spencer and Ernst Haeckel had helped him foster his own concept of relativity, while his representations of relativity had interacted with modern artists including Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp and Umberto Boccioni. This book shows Lawrence’s exploration of relativity in the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century European cultural climate of Modernism and examines his representation of relativity in Women in Love (1920), The Lost Girl (1920), Aaron’s Rod (1922) and The Fox (original version, 1920; revised version, 1922).

While the dehumanizing effects of technology, modernity, and industrialization have been widely recognized in D. H. Lawrence's works, no book-length study has been dedicated to this topic. This collection of newly commissioned essays by a cast of international scholars fills a genuine void and investigates Lawrence's peculiar relationship with modern technology and modernity in its many and varied aspects. D. H. Lawrence is renowned for his scathing criticism of the ruling class, industrialisation of the country and wartime patriotism. However, his texts bear the imprint of contemporary dominant ideologies and discourses of the period. Comparing Lawrence’s texts to various major and minor contemporary novels, journal articles, political pamphlets and history books, this book aims to demonstrate that Lawrence’s texts are ambivalent: his texts harbour the dynamism of conflicting power struggles between the subversive and the reactionary. For example, in some apparently apolitical texts such as The White Peacock and Movements in European History, reactionary ideologies and wartime propaganda are embedded. Some texts like Lady Chatterley’s Lover are intended to be a radical critique of the period wherein it was composed, but they also bear discernible traces of the contemporary frame of reference that they intend to subvert. Focusing on Lawrence’s stories and novels set in the mining countryside and the works composed under the impact of the First World War, this book establishes that Lawrence’s texts in fact consist of multiple layers that are often in conflict with each other, serving as a testimony to the age of modernity.

“Comes over one an absolute necessity to move.” This opening sentence of Sea and Sardinia (1921) is strikingly telling about D. H. Lawrence’s life, which can be considered both literally and metaphorically as a journey to the sun. In this respect, as the title of our symposium – “Lake Garda: Gateway to D. H. Lawrence’s Voyage to the Sun” – suggests, he began his life-long quest in Gargnano, in 1912. This eponymous book draws together the papers presented at the Gargnano Symposium in 2012 to commemorate the centenary of the writer’s stay in that “paradise” (3 September 1912 – 11 April 1913). The focus of our event was on Lawrence’s “sun search” and “travelling”; two thought-provoking, multifaceted topics for a sparkling critical debate, expanding outside “canonic” criticism into music and painting. This collection, in fact, comes with a CD featuring 12 songs; poems by Lawrence put to music for soprano and piano by the American composer William Neil. It also includes the reproduction of seven paintings from “Via D. H. Lawrence”, out of a sequence of 25, in which the German painter Sabine Frank follows the writer’s footsteps in the Garda area. The result is a unique and stimulating book, combining literature, music and painting.
