Although readers of detective fiction ordinarily expect to learn the mystery's solution at the end, there is another kind of detective story—the history of which encompasses writers as diverse as Poe, Borges, Robbe-Grillet, Auster, and Stephen King—that ends with a question rather than an answer. The detective not only fails to solve the crime, but also confronts insoluble mysteries of interpretation and identity. As the contributors to Detecting Texts contend, such stories belong to a distinct genre, the "metaphysical detective story," in which the detective hero's inability to interpret the mystery inevitably casts doubt on the reader's similar attempt to make sense of the text and the world. The two-volume proceedings LNCS 9314 and 9315, constitute the proceedings of the 16th Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia, PCM 2015, held in Gwangju, South Korea, in September 2015. The total of 138 full and 32 short papers presented in these proceedings was carefully reviewed and selected from 224 submissions. As technologies are fast advancing, the importance of text detection and recognition is receiving special attention from the researchers. Thus, one can see several real-time applications of video text processing which requires cognitive-based methods to find a solution. The main applications are (1) retrieving and indexing video based on semantic of the content of the video, (2) machine translation to assist foreigners, (3) assisting blind people to walk on the road freely without aid, (4) automatic vehicle driving, (5) license plate tracing to catch vehicles which violate the traffic signals, (6) monitoring the images posted on social media based on text and content of the images, (7) identifying the location based on the address of the street and shops, etc., (8) tracing players in the sports based on the jersey/bib number or text, and (9) in the same way, tracing the bib number in case of marathon and other events. For the above-mentioned applications, text detection and recognition in video and natural scene images is an integral part of the system.

The author treats, in historical and philosophical terms, the contributions of the traditionally marginalized genre of detective fiction to epistemology: how detective fiction not only traces the progression of knowledge and its discovery, as has been the traditional model for understanding this genre, but, in fact, constructs it through narrative. Particular focus is on Colin Dexter, creator of the Inspector Morse character and series. This work also links detective fiction to more legitimate, accepted realms of literature and criticism: semiotics (the reading of clues, with the body as a major one); epistolary fiction, long hailed as an early form of the modern novel; and heteroglossia, an important aspect of Marxist theory, here linked to the power struggles and imbalances produced by the pursuit and construction of knowledge.
