Excerpt from Description of the Dismal Swamp and a Proposal to Drain the Swamp Sheet 2, p. 1, is headed Coll. Washington Company, and is a detailed surveyor's description of the property. It commences: Beginning at a point at the Mouth of Poison Swamp, running thence, and then embraces about 110 closely written surveyor's entries, delimiting the boundaries, and filling the whole page. Sheet 2, p. 2, contains a blank ms. Legal document drawn up by Justice Henry Reddick, and has nothing to do with the land records. The sheet was convenient for the. Surveyor, and he used the other side of it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. First published in 1728, this pamphlet by William Byrd offers a detailed account of the Dismal Swamp, a vast and foreboding wetland on the border of Virginia and North Carolina. In addition to describing the swamp's physical features and wildlife, the pamphlet also includes Byrd's bold proposal to drain the swamp, a project that he believed would greatly benefit the region's economy. Excerpt from Dismal Swamp Master Plan There is a present need for acres in Class III (natural) sites. Subtracting needed acreage in the Destina tion Park category - from the total needed acreage in Class III leaves a balance of acres. The cost estimate to acquire and develop this acreage is 233 million dollars. To help interpret the nature of Class III needs, it should be pointed out that specialized outdoor recreation areas are of the nature that fee acquisition is not always necessary or desirable for them.
