Excerpt from Dental Digest, Vol. 1 We feel quite sure that we have not overstated the require ments a dentist should possess. We have said he should be logi cal, as we believe a logical man who is able to reason from cause and effect is much better prepared to perform the various Opera tions successfully and with good judgment than one not pos sessed of a logical mind. We have said he should be a physician. We should regard a dentist deficient if he were not able to prescribe hygienically for his patients with as much intelligence as the aver age practitioner of medicine. Not that we wish to under esti mate the ability of the average practitioner of medicine, but we wish the dentist to have intelligence enough to understand the diseases of the mouth and the causes Of such, and also to be able to prescribe a preventive treatment in connection with the more technical processes of filling the teeth, and to do this requires a good degree of hygienic knowledge. Excerpt from The Dental Digest, Vol. 4: A Monthly Summary of Dental Science Devoted to the Progress of Dentistry; January-December, 1898 A dentist needs some means of indicating precisely the forms of the instruments used in the operations he endeavors to describe, and especially is this badly needed in schoolwork. So long as the teacher has no means of accurately designating the particular instrument he employs, so long will his manipulative teaching be vague and uncertain. The pupil will be unable to know just what is meant, and any description of the manner of using individual instruments will be confusing and without force. Not only this, but the confusion gives rise to an unnecessarily great multiplicity of instrument forms. We being unable to teach manipulation, the student fails to learn the range of valuable instrument forms, and the powers and capabilities of instruments, and is therefore continually seeking new forms, hoping to find that which will serve him better. This being done without accurate appreciation of mechanical laws, the vast majority of efforts are fail ures, which tend only to further confuse the manufacturer's numbers. Excerpt from The Archives of Dentistry, 1884, Vol. 1: A Monthly Record of Dental Science and Art This objection to its use, where its surface is exposed only to the secretions of the mouth, is practically of no moment. Ten or twelve years integrity as a stopping, should be satisfactory endorse ment of its value as a filling material, and this is not too much to expect of it in favorable locations. In such it may properly be depended upon as a permanent filling. As a temporary filling, the facility with which it may be removed and replaced at any time, recommends it. To secure the best results, as perfect preparation of the cavity is necessary, as for any other material, and as careful protection against moisture is demanded in the introduction of the filling, which feature in the operation must also be performed with the utmost care. Suitable instruments are as necessary for the proper working of this material, as for gold or any other, and without them, the best results cannot be expected. The method of its introduction into the cavity, not unlike other materials, varies with the peculiarities of the case presented, and a satisfactory result demands the best judgment of the operator. With proper care, a satisfactory result is comparatively easy of attainment, but neglect of proper precaution will as certainly result in failure, as would the indifferent use of any other material. Danger of failure, threatens in proportion to the degree of careless ness, induced by the simplicity of the task to be undertaken, while success attends our efforts in ratio with the degree of anxiety and purpose excited by the difficulties presented. Not unlike other materials, experience will be found no disadvantage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Dental Digest, Vol. 6: A Monthly Summary of Dental Science Devoted to the Progress of Dentistry; The Official Organ of the Dental Protective Association of the United States; January, 1900 As to eucain B, there is much to be said in its favor as com pared with cocain. During the past year I have frequently used it in practice for devitalizing pulps, for local applications, and by injection, and have as yet observed no evil effects of note. Eucain, however, is not capable of producing the same degree of anesthesia under like circumstances as is cocain. This has been proven beyond the possibility of a doubt by the experiments I have made. As this paper is to deal only with the toxic properties of these drugs, I will not here discuss their anesthetic properties.
