The American realist painter Thomas Eakins is now widely acknowledged as one of the most important American artists, though during his lifetime he was a controversial figure whose work received little recognition. He worked exactingly from life, choosing as his subject the people of his hometown of Philadelphia. He produced several hundred portraits, usually of friends, family members, or prominent people in the arts and sciences, carrying the tradition of nineteenth century Realism to perhaps its highest achievement. His art was never compromised by the need to flatter patrons or sitters, and honesty was his only policy. His work served as an impetus for the burst of realism in American painting during the early years of the twentieth century, especially in the work of George Bellows and his circle. Delphi’s Masters of Art Series presents the world’s first digital e-Art books, allowing readers to explore the works of great artists in comprehensive detail. This volume presents Eakins’ complete paintings, with concise introductions, hundreds of high quality images and the usual Delphi bonus material. The British crime fiction writer Peter Cheyney is the creator of the American FBI agent Lemmy Caution and the English detective Slim Callaghan. These characters were constructed as a British response to the hardboiled detectives of American fiction. In later years Cheyney’s style matured with the ‘Dark’ books, drawing wide praise during World War II for bringing more realism to espionage fiction. Although his works have suffered neglect in recent times, the fame of Cheyney’s novels in the post-war period cannot be underestimated, having sold over 5 million copies. The founder of modern sculpture, Auguste Rodin was a late nineteenth century pioneer, whose work changed the course of the history of art. His greatest achievement was the restoration of the role of ancient sculpture, showing that a modern artist could capture the physical and intellectual force of a subject, while freeing the artistic medium from the repetition of traditional patterns. Rodin’s enduing popularity is often ascribed to his emotion-laden representations of ordinary men and women and his ability to find beauty and pathos. Masterpieces such as ‘The Kiss’ and ‘The Thinker’ are widely used outside the fine arts as symbols of human emotion, transcending the sculptor’s medium and helping us to understand the fundamental essence of being a human. Delphi’s Masters of Art Series presents the world’s first digital e-Art books, allowing readers to explore the works of great artists in comprehensive detail. This volume presents Rodin’s collected works, with concise introductions, hundreds of high quality images and the usual Delphi bonus material. The English interwar writer Arthur Ransome, best known for the ‘Swallows and Amazons’ children’s books, is noted for popularising the pattern for “holiday adventure” stories. A writer of various genres, his first success, ‘Bohemia in London’, is a partly autobiographical account of his early days. He also published a noted general ‘History of Story-Telling’, as well as landmark critical works on Edgar Allan Poe and Oscar Wilde. During the Great War, Ransome worked as a war correspondent in Russia, where he studied native folktales, which he retold for children. He also wrote extensively about his passion of angling, producing the seminal work in its field, ‘Rod and Line’.
