C. Day Lewis (1904-1972) was one of the leading young poets of the 1930's who - along with W. H. Auden, Louis MacNeice, and Stephen Spender - broke away from the staid poetic establishment to dominate British poetry in the middle third of the century. Here, for the first time, are all the poems Day Lewis wrote, including occasional verse which has never appeared in book form and a number of poems previously published only in limited editions. The Complete Poems has been edited, with an introduction and textual notes, by Jill Balcon, the poet's widow.

The first published African American poet, Jupiter Hammon was born into slavery in 1711 on Long Island, New York. Over the years he became a well-respected preacher and clerk-bookkeeper, as his poems were circulated widely. His poetry is composed in hymn stanzas and is noted for its rhythmic and passionate expression. In later years, attending the 1786 inaugural meeting of the African Society in New York, he delivered ‘An Address to Negros in the State of New-York’ — his most influential work. An eleventh century Persian mathematician and astronomer, Omar Khayyam is renowned in his own country for his scientific achievements, though he is chiefly known to English-speaking readers through Edward FitzGerald’s 1859 translation of ‘The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám’. The eighteenth century English poet, dramatist and philosopher, Edward Young is best remembered today for the enormously popular ‘Night-Thoughts’, a long, didactic poem contemplating the theme of death. The poem was inspired by the successive deaths of Young’s stepdaughter, her husband and the poet’s own wife over a five year period.
