Desde 1971, año denominado de Acción contra el Racismo y la Discriminación Racial por la ONU, hasta 1997, declarado Año Europeo contra el Racismo y la Xenofobia, la discriminación racial no ha ido disminuyendo, sino que, debido a múltiples causas económicas, políticas, sociales y religiosas, ha aumentado su intensidad, la variedad de sus expresiones y los terribles fenómenos a que da lugar. ¿Qué puede aportar la educación para contrarrestar u oponerse a este fenómeno? ¿Cómo puede promover la transformación social? La escuela debe ser una plataforma para el desarrollo de la interculturalidad, fomentando estrategias de aprendizaje que enseñen a los ciudadanos a leer el mundo desde diversas perspectivas, evitando el dogmatismo y la intolerancia. This book assembles a selection of essays on Discourse and Intercultural Relations presented at Murcia University in September 2004. After the recent outburst of the East-West conflict intercultural relations and the challenges embedded in intercultural communication are of increasing importance. This compilation unravels these topics from the point of view of Discourse Analysis and Cultural Studies. The main aim is to highlight the discursive strategies employed by the dominant political elite in a variety of contexts to maintain and reinforce their power position in intercultural encounters. The paramount concern is, therefore, to reflect upon the interrelations between language, power and discourse (in the Foucaultian sense). Within a broad theoretical framework, the contributions are divided into two main parts. Part I includes papers which work within the field of Critical Discourse Studies and explore ideological issues, such as the concept of 'otherness', identity, race and the mass media's manipulation of public opinion. In culturally diverse societies, one of the biggest questions on our minds is 'how shall we all live together?' Mutual Intercultural Relations offers an answer to this fundamental and topical issue. By exploring intercultural relationships between dominant/national and non-dominant/ethnic populations in seventeen societies around the world, the contributors are each able to chart the respective views of those populations and to generate 'general' principles of intercultural relations. The research reported in this book is guided by three psychological hypotheses which are evaluated by empirical research: multiculturalism, contact and integration. It was also carried out comparatively in order to gain knowledge about intercultural relations that may be general and not limited to a few social and political contexts. Understanding these general principles will offer help in the development of public policies and programmes designed to improve the quality of intercultural relations in culturally diverse societies around the world.

In this tumultuous world, characterized by unprecedented migratory movements, societal evolution intersects with an increasing diversity that presents profound challenges. The global landscape is marked by 33 armed conflicts in 2022 alone, resulting in forced displacement and an exceeding count of 100 million displaced individuals worldwide. The traditional understanding of migration as a response to individualized prosecution has expanded to encompass "survival migration," incorporating environmental change and livelihood collapse. This paradigm shift necessitates a reevaluation of human rights and a compelling call for transformative global and intercultural education to address the vulnerabilities, inequities, and discrimination faced by displaced and native youth. Transformative Intercultural Global Education is a project aimed at shedding light on educational inequalities stemming from race, migration, forced displacement, and cultural factors. Through innovative empirical results, theoretical frameworks, and educational practices, this book seeks to contribute to quality education and, subsequently, a more sustainable society. The objective is to provide educators with proposals that strengthen educational policies and programs aligned with global citizenship, fostering sensitivity, critical thinking, and commitment towards respectful and tolerant coexistence. Culture, Race, and Class-Based Perspectives in Public Relations, edited by Damion Waymer, covers timely and understudied topics in the field of public relations (PR). Via research, case analysis, and theoretical discussion, the contributors to this volume explore the ways that scholars can address issues of voice (or the lack thereof) that marginalized publics have encountered in the past or are currently encountering in regard to matters of culture, race, and class.
