Garry Kasparov's 1997 chess match against the IBM supercomputer Deep Blue was a watershed moment in the history of technology. It was the dawn of a new era in artificial intelligence: a machine capable of beating the reigning human champion at this most cerebral game. That moment was more than a century in the making, and in this breakthrough book, Kasparov reveals his astonishing side of the story for the first time. He describes how it felt to strategize against an implacable, untiring opponent with the whole world watching, and recounts the history of machine intelligence through the microcosm of chess, considered by generations of scientific pioneers to be a key to unlocking the secrets of human and machine cognition. Kasparov uses his unrivaled experience to look into the future of intelligent machines and sees it bright with possibility. As many critics decry artificial intelligence as a menace, particularly to human jobs, Kasparov shows how humanity can rise to new heights with the help of our most extraordinary creations, rather than fear them. Deep Thinking is a tightly argued case for technological progress, from the man who stood at its precipice with his own career at stake.

Are robots going to take my job? How are smartphones affecting my kids? Do I need to worry about privacy when I get online or ask Siri for directions? Whatever questions you have about AI, The Age of AI gives you insights on how to navigate this brand-new world as you apply God's ageless truths to your life and future. We interact with artificial intelligence, or AI, nearly every moment of the day without knowing it. From our social media feeds to our smart thermostats and Alexa and Google Home, AI is everywhere--but how is it shaping our world? In The Age of AI, Jason Thacker, associate research fellow at the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, helps us navigate our digital age in this thoughtful exploration of the social, moral, and ethical challenges of our ongoing interactions with artificial intelligence. Applying God's Word to this new AI-empowered age, Thacker sheds light on: How Christian truth transforms the way we use AI How AI affects us individually, in our relationships, and in our society at large How to navigate the digital age wisely With theological depth and a wide awareness of the current trends in AI, Jason is a steady guide who reminds us that while technology is changing the world, it can't shake the foundations of the Christian faith. Praise for The Age of AI: "The Age of AI informs us and assists us in envisioning a future that is filled with tools, influences, opportunities, and challenges relating to artificial intelligence. While many may fear the unknown future before us, Jason Thacker presents the imperative need to always lift up the constancy of the image of God and the dignity of all human life as presented in the Holy Scriptures, the Bible. I am thankful Jason's book can help churches, pastors, theologians, and Christian leaders in all vocations to wrestle through this current topic, always being committed to what this book states profoundly: God-given dignity isn't ours to assign or remove." --Dr. Ronnie Floyd, president and CEO, Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee

A penetrating guide to artificial intelligence: what it is, what it does, and how it will change our lives At a breathtaking pace, artificial intelligence is getting better and faster at making complex decisions. AI can already identify malignant tumors on CT scans, give legal advice, out-bluff the best poker players in the world, and, with ever-increasing skill, drive our cars. In Who’s Afraid of AI?, award-winning author Thomas Ramge expertly explains how machines are learning to learn, and he questions what today’s explosion of AI capability could mean for tomorrow: Is it ethical to allow robots—endlessly patient—to replace human caregivers in providing comfort and companionship to the elderly? Since AI feeds on big data, can we prevent its misuse by corporations or the government? Will AI ever be capable of runaway self-improvement? And if “the singularity” does arrive, with AI’s intelligence exponentially outpacing our own, what will become of us when, in many ways, we’re obsolete?

The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Our Ability to Focus and Think Deeply In today's digital age, our attention is constantly being pulled in multiple directions by an endless stream of notifications, emails, and social media alerts. The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has further complicated our ability to focus and think deeply, making it harder to concentrate on the tasks at hand. Research has shown that AI can both enhance and hinder our ability to focus and think deeply. For example, AI-powered brain training programs have been shown to improve attention and memory in older adults (Wolinsky et al., 2013). Additionally, AI can be used to reduce distractions in the workplace by automatically filtering out irrelevant emails or messages (Baumeister et al., 2018). On the other hand, AI can also be a source of distraction and information overload. Social media platforms, for example, are designed to capture our attention and keep us engaged for as long as possible (Fletcher, 2018). This can lead to a constant state of hyperstimulation that can interfere with our ability to think deeply and creatively. Furthermore, cultural factors play a significant role in our ability to focus and think deeply. In a culture that values speed, productivity, and multitasking, there is often a pressure to prioritize quantity over quality (Rosen, 2008). Additionally, social norms and peer pressure can make it difficult to disconnect from technology and create a more focused environment (Kushlev et al., 2016). In this book, I explore the intersection of AI and attention, and provide practical strategies for reclaiming our ability to focus and think deeply in the age of distraction. I delve into the myths and realities of multitasking, navigate the attention economy and digital distractions, and explore the synergy of mindfulness and AI. To optimize our brains for deep thinking, I discuss the importance of sleep and exercise in enhancing cognitive function (Hillman et al., 2014). I also explore how to embrace the mindset of a deep thinker in the age of AI and technological change. The future of attention and deep thinking in the context of AI is an important topic that I examine. As AI continues to evolve and impact our lives in ways we cannot yet imagine, it is crucial that we develop the skills necessary to stay focused and think deeply in the face of constant distraction. Join me on a journey to reclaim our ability to focus and think deeply in the age of AI. Let's explore the challenges and opportunities of attention in the digital age, and learn how to cultivate a more mindful, creative, and productive life. Together, we can reclaim our attention and achieve our full potential in a distracted world.

A human-inspired, linguistically sophisticated model of language understanding for intelligent agent systems. One of the original goals of artificial intelligence research was to endow intelligent agents with human-level natural language capabilities. Recent AI research, however, has focused on applying statistical and machine learning approaches to big data rather than attempting to model what people do and how they do it. In this book, Marjorie McShane and Sergei Nirenburg return to the original goal of recreating human-level intelligence in a machine. They present a human-inspired, linguistically sophisticated model of language understanding for intelligent agent systems that emphasizes meaning--the deep, context-sensitive meaning that a person derives from spoken or written language.
