Decent World is a collection of tough poems. Each bleeding comes from a heart desperate to name the truth of my life, revealing that in their very telling has set me on a journey at once, terrible and fine. I might even venture, redemptive. For within these words is a searching, relentless but pure, to find healing, not only for me, but for all whose throats have been cut, by others as well as by themselves. A journey at last become whole for all of us. This is a book of truth that has come to this writer through no easy or virtuous paths, it is presented to you as such, and does so unashamed and without any apologies. This is our journey, so join me.

'Quietly magical ... a book that draws you in and then refuses to let you go' - Stephen May, author of Sell Us the Rope Summer Dawidowitz has spent the past year caring for her grandmother, Josie — a lifelong Communist, a dedicated teacher, and the founder of an organization that tutors schoolchildren. When Josie dies, everything that seemed solid in Summer's life comes into question. What sort of relationship will she have with the mother who abandoned her? Will she meet with the brother Josie exiled from the family? Does she really want to go back to the non-monogamous household she was part of before she moved in to take care of Josie? Finally, does she still believe a small, committed group of citizens can change the world, and if so - how? Reader Reviews 'A compassionate and well-observed exploration of troubled families and relationships ... perceptive and quietly moving' 'An intriguing family saga' 'Excellent, deep and very funny'

Why does the United States pursue robust military invasions to change some foreign regimes but not others? Conventional accounts focus on geopolitics or elite ideology. C. William Walldorf, Jr., argues that the politics surrounding two broad, public narratives—the liberal narrative and the restraint narrative—often play a vital role in shaping US decisions whether to pursue robust and forceful regime change. Using current sociological work on cultural trauma, Walldorf explains how master narratives strengthen (and weaken), and he develops clear predictions for how and when these narratives will shape policy. To Shape Our World For Good demonstrates the importance and explanatory power of the master-narrative argument, using a sophisticated combination of methods: quantitative analysis and eight cases in the postwar period that include Korea, Vietnam, and El Salvador during the Cold War and more recent cases in Iraq and Libya. The case studies provide the environment for a critical assessment of the connections among the politics of master narratives, pluralism, and the common good in contemporary US foreign policy and grand strategy. Walldorf adds new insight to our understanding of US expansionism and cautions against the dangers of misusing popular narratives for short-term political gains—a practice all too common both past and present.
