Excerpt from Debaters' Manual Debating is the oral presentation of arguments under such conditions that each speaker may reply directly to the arguments of the opposing speaker. The debate is opened by the first speaker for the affirmative. He is then followed by the first speaker for the negative, each side speaking alternately until each man has presented his main speech. After all the main speeches have been delivered the negative opens the rebuttal. The speakers in rebuttal alternate negative and affirmative. This order gives the closing speech to the affirmative. Excerpt from A Manual of Debate and Oral Discussion: For Schools, Societies and Clubs The purpose of this book is to present in the briefest and simplest manner possible the necessary elementary principles which are observed wherever orderly public discussion takes place, - whether in a formally organized debate on. an unamendable proposition, or in the more informal discussion of separate propositions related to a general topic It is clear that in both situations we are dealing with oral argumentation. The principles to be followed, either in debate or discussion, as these terms are used here, are necessarily very similar. Throughout this text, however, both forms are kept in mind, and here and there special adaptations to one or the other are definitely discussed. Probably the ideal method of studying in this field, of preparing one's self to do effective oral argument, is to pursue a regular course of classroom work.
