This year a total of 295 entries were assessed for their distinctive qualities by a panel of experts looking for outstanding work in areas such as content, design, picture editing, typography, choice of materials, printing, and binding. The ?Best Dutch Book Designs 2019? presents a comprehensive overview of the 33 selections made during this difficult yet rewarding process. Met een historie die teruggaat tot 1926 is de jaarlijkse uitverkiezing door een vakjury van de Nederlandse Best Verzorgde Boeken de oudste van Europa. De wat ouderwetse term 'best verzorgd' is altijd gehandhaafd in het bewustzijn dat de jury?s in de eerste plaats boeken uitverkiezen en niet alleen boekontwerpen. In ieder goed gemaakt boek ontmoeten inhoud en vorm elkaar; ieder goed gemaakt boek komt voort uit een samenwerking tussen een opdrachtgever (meestal een uitgever), een ontwerper en de grafische industrie. De rolverdeling tussen de verschillende partners wisselt steeds.0Jaarlijks leggen Nederlandse uitgevers, ontwerpers en producenten 300 à 400 boeken aan een vijfkoppige vakjury voor. Het betreft boeken van allerlei genres: van roman tot kinderboek, van kookboek tot kunstboek, van bedrijfsboek tot filosofieboek. Ieder boek kan een Best Verzorgd Boek worden. Ook digitale publicaties. No one demands that people move to cities; people tend to do so, on their own. People choose to move to cities for opportunity. Such choices are often made unconsciously, as they are based on rules, traditions, and local communities–or a combination of all three. Un-Conscious-City explores and unravels Dutch architect Wiel Arets’ kaleidoscopic viewpoints on the ways the collective, unconscious decisions taken by the world’s citizens throughout time–a process that remains invisible to the naked eye–are now working to transform and shift the physical, sensory, and emotional experiences of human beings, as they navigate and live in today’s metropolises as well as the countryside. People tend to only belong to one religion, one society, or one club–which completely defines their existence. One day most human beings will live in a global­nomadic-urban-condition; this will soon be amplified to unknown heights. Un-Conscious-City raises questions, predicaments, and ideals regarding the future of our cities, while recognizing their limitations. This book displays and dissects the career and design motives of graphic designer Joost Grootens. In a systematic fashion it charts the first 100 books designed by Grootens over the past ten years. In the first chapter, '10 years', Grootens uses timelines, lists and graphs to map the course of his career as a designer, the people he worked with and the places where the work took place. In '100 books', the designer dissects his book designs. He details the grids, formats, paper stocks, colours and typefaces, and charts the books' structures and compositions. '18,788 pages' shows at actual size a selection of spreads from books designed by Grootens, including the internationally acclaimed atlases. In the text 'I swear I use no art at all' Joost Grootens gives a personal account of making books and the ideas behind his designs.

Nothing about Dutch graphic design duo Mevis & van Deursen conforms to type. Praised for their innovative but clear presentation, they have designed everything from artist's books for Gabriel Orozco and Rineke Dijkstra to an official government stamp commemorating the marriage of Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander, based on the number two, since the wedding date was 02-02-02. This book represents a range of work from the past 15 years, mostly books but also posters and smaller pieces. However, the artists have chosen not simply to present the work again but to make it new through collage and reinterpretative interplay, thus "recycling" their innovative design.
