Zia Engineering and Environmental, LLC (Zia) personnel conducted data recovery excavations at LA 32078, a prehistoric cultural property located 1.5 km southeast of the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) Headquarters, Doña Ana County, New Mexico. The investigation was conducted in response to a Statement of Work received from the Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Stewardship Division (DPW-ES), WSMR. It was designed to mitigate the adverse effects of planned construction within the site area and ensure the U.S. Army and WSMR's ongoing compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), 36 CFR 800; Army Regulation 200-2 (AR), and other relevant laws, regulations, standards, and guidelines. Site LA 32078 represents two or more Mesilla phase occupations ranging between A.D. 550 and 1000. Subsistence and structural information indicate this location probably served as a wintering settlement, although occasional warm season habitation can not be ruled out. Several characteristics of this site lack direct correlates in the local archaeological record.
