Abstract: "This thesis concerns the privacy implications of digital communication with vehicles. At present, an ever-increasing number of automobiles are being outfitted with digital sensing systems that record or transmit data about the vehicle in real-time. These are known as telematic systems. The result is that a large amount of information about the use of a vehicle is being stored in the vehicle itself, is transmitted over airwaves and is used and stored at the point of reception. Much of this information is stored and processed without the knowledge or consent of the vehicle's owner, let alone the driver or the occupants. This situation naturally raises privacy issues. For what purpose is the data being taken? Are there unintended harmful uses of the data? Do public safety and other benefits outweigh the privacy risks? ... [sic] We attempt to answer these questions in this thesis study. Initially, we introduce the meaning of telematics, how it works, its current state and future growth. We then look at the differences between telematics and other location-based technologies which forms one of the major distinguishing factors between this thesis and previous research. Next, we explore the kinds of data that can be collected from automobiles. This data can have many uses that could result in the invasion of privacy. After investigating these privacy implications we create guidelines that can be used by government agencies and self-regulating bodies to create privacy policies for telematics. Finally, we discuss the future of telematics data privacy."

Telematics is offering a totally new scope for handling knowledge in the speed of its acquisition, learning, transference and communication. Healthcare professionals maybe misled and the patient maybe treated incorrectly. Secure and reliable information is a must in healthcare if the professionals cannot rely on the correctness of these modern streams of information. The protection of the patient's privacy is another security objective. Intensive national data protection regulations are today guiding professional work, but long before data protection came into the focus of public concern, ethical and professional demands already controlled the disclosure of patient data. This is the history of medical data protection. The issues presented in this book are critical because telematics technology is now being used througout the health care system for dealing with very sensitve data. More and more computers and systems are interconnected, they are increasingly interoperable. Yet the primary demands are that they are correct, not corrupted, relevant, complete, and accesible only to authorised persons. This raises technological and legal, regulatory, and ethical issues that are dealt with in a national context, but also at the Community level in the form of proposals for EU directives on data protection and concerning the protection of personal data and privacy in the context of digital telecommunications networks. "The issues presented in this book are critical because telematics technology is now being used throughout healthcare systems for dealing with very sensitive data." The aim of the book is to create a bridge between two ‘lands’ that are usually kept separate: technical tools and legal rules should be bound together for moulding a special ‘toolbox’ to solve present and future issues. The volume is intended to contribute to this ‘toolbox’ in the area of software services, while addressing how to make legal studies work closely with engineers’ and computer scientists’ fields of expertise, who are increasingly involved in tangled choices on daily programming and software development. In this respect, law has not lost its importance and its own categories in the digital world, but as well as any social science needs to experience a new realistic approach amid technological development and individuals’ fundamental rights and freedoms.

This book features peer reviewed contributions from across the disciplines on themes relating to protection of data and to privacy protection. The authors explore fundamental and legal questions, investigate case studies and consider concepts and tools such as privacy by design, the risks of surveillance and fostering trust. Readers may trace both technological and legal evolution as chapters examine current developments in ICT such as cloud computing and the Internet of Things. Written during the process of the fundamental revision of revision of EU data protection law (the 1995 Data Protection Directive), this volume is highly topical. Since the European Parliament has adopted the General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation 2016/679), which will apply from 25 May 2018, there are many details to be sorted out. This volume identifies and exemplifies key, contemporary issues. From fundamental rights and offline alternatives, through transparency requirements to health data breaches, the reader is provided with a rich and detailed picture, including some daring approaches to privacy and data protection. The book will inform and inspire all stakeholders. Researchers with an interest in the philosophy of law and philosophy of technology, in computers and society, and in European and International law will all find something of value in this stimulating and engaging work.

This volume brings together papers that offer methodologies, conceptual analyses, highlight issues, propose solutions, and discuss practices regarding privacy and data protection. It is one of the results of the eight annual International Conference on Computers, Privacy, and Data Protection, CPDP 2015, held in Brussels in January 2015. The book explores core concepts, rights and values in (upcoming) data protection regulation and their (in)adequacy in view of developments such as Big and Open Data, including the right to be forgotten, metadata, and anonymity. It discusses privacy promoting methods and tools such as a formal systems modeling methodology, privacy by design in various forms (robotics, anonymous payment), the opportunities and burdens of privacy self management, the differentiating role privacy can play in innovation. The book also discusses EU policies with respect to Big and Open Data and provides advice to policy makers regarding these topics. Also attention is being paid to regulation and its effects, for instance in case of the so-called ‘EU-cookie law’ and groundbreaking cases, such as Europe v. Facebook. This interdisciplinary book was written during what may turn out to be the final stages of the process of the fundamental revision of the current EU data protection law by the Data Protection Package proposed by the European Commission. It discusses open issues and daring and prospective approaches. It will serve as an insightful resource for readers with an interest in privacy and data protection.
