Unmistakably unique in his crisp coat colored in mustard or pepper, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier cuts a silhouette without compare in dogdom. His large, distinctive head crowned with a silky topknot; his full, round eyes, revealing intelligence and sensitivity; and his long, low, shapely body, and short legs add to the breed's unmistakable distinction and purity. Although the Dandie is counted among the gamest of working terriers, the breed's gentleman-like ways, independent spirit, and special brand of dignified affection recommend him as a charming companion dog for all experienced dog owners. Author Betty-Anne Stenmark, one of the doyennes of the breed in the United States, a highly regarded breeder and judge, begins this Comprehensive Owner's Guide with a detailed chapter on the breed's origins in England and the United States, featuring many historical photographs of important dogs. As only a lifelong Dandie lover can do, the author conveys the ineffable spirit and temperament of her favorite dog in an enjoyable chapter on the breed's characteristics, which all newcomers to the breed will find enlightening and entertaining. The AKC breed standard is presented alongside the author's expert analysis, making this book indispensable to all serious Dandie students.New owners will welcome the well-prepared chapter on finding a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, and obedience are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies. Guest author Emma Greenway, a Dandie expert and breeder from down under, provides two excellent sections on the proper grooming of the Dandie and training the puppy for show. In all, there are over 135 full-color photographs in this useful and reliable volume.. The chapter on healthcare provides up-to-date detailed information on selecting a qualified veterinarian, vaccinations, preventing and dealing with parasites, infectious diseases, and more. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier is a small breed of dog that belongs to the terrier family and originates from Scotland. The breed has relatively short legs and a long body - giving it a similar body structure to a Dachshund. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier was originally developed to hunt otters and badgers along the board of Scotland and England during the early 1600s. The breed was relatively unknown until the Dandie Dinmont Terrier Club (DDTC) was formed in 1875 and a breed standard was created. The breed became internationally recognized in 1888 when the Dandie Dinmont Terrier was registered with the American Kennel Club. Despite the breed gaining popularity in the late 1800s for hunting purposes, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier was officially considered the rarest breed of dog that is native to the British Isles in 2006. Due to its dwindling numbers the Dandie Dinmont Terrier is now a part of the United Kingdom's list of 'Vulnerable Native Breeds.' The Dandie Dinmont Terrier has a very unique appearance. They have a silky coat that forms a 'topknot' on the top of the dog's head. The breed's coat comes in two potential color ranges: either 'pepper' or 'mustard.' 'Pepper' coats range from a dark blueish black to a very light silvery grey colorations. 'Mustard' coats range from reddish brown to light fawn colorations - it is also not uncommon for 'mustard' colored Dandie Dinmont Terrier to have white heads. As a whole the breed is known to be loyal, affectionate and tough which makes it a perfect pet for a household with older children. Due to the breed's elongated body structure it is not recommend to be kept in a household with small children, as an unlucky drop from a short height could severely injury a Dandie Dinmont Terrier spine. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier is known to make a perfect guard dog, but is considered to be the most docile and undemanding of the terrier family. It is important to socialize your Dandie Dinmont Terrier at a young age due to the fact that they are 'very game' - which means that the Dandie Dinmont Terrier is willing to fight other animals (dogs, foxes, cats etc) for their territory. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Dandie Dinmont Terrier's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Dandie Dinmont Terrier, raising your Dandie Dinmont Terrier from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between!
