Excerpt from Cyclopedia of Engineering, Vol. 7 The editors have freely consulted the standard technical literature of Europe and America in the preparation of these volumes. They desire to express their indebtedness, particularly to the following eminent authorities, whose well-known treatises should be in the library of every engineer. Grateful acknowledgment is here made also for the invaluable co-operation of the foremost engineering firms, in making these volumes thoroughly representative of the best and latest practice in the design and construction of steam and electrical machines; also for the valuable drawings and data, suggestions, criticisms, and other courtesies. Excerpt from Cyclopedia of Engineering, Vol. 6 of 7: A General Reference Work on Steam Boilers, Pumps, Engines, and Turbines The gases composing air are in the latter class; and air itself, therefore, for all practical purposes, may be looked upon as a perfect gas. In fact, the behavior of air is found in practice to conform so closely with the laws of perfect gases that the discrepancies may be ignored in ordinary calculations such as those involved in the present treatment of the subject. Table I, 'from Richards' Compressed Air, lists the weight of air per cubic foot at various temperatures Fahrenheit; also the volume of one pound of air at the same temperatures. The weight of a cubic foot of dry air at any atmospheric pressure and at any temperature Fahrenheit, may be found by dividing the constant 39 819 by the absolute temperature (temperature Fahrenheit The volume of one pound of dry air at atmospheric pres sure and any temperature, is found by dividing the absolute tempera ture by the constant Thus. Excerpt from Cyclopedia of Engineering, Vol. 2 of 7: A General Reference Work on Steam Boilers, Pumps, Engines, and Turbines, Gas and Oil Engines, Automobiles, Etc Sir Humphry Davy showed that two pieces of ice might be melted by rubbing them together. He thus proved that heat can be produced by the expenditure of work only. This leads to the important conclusion that heat must be a form of energy, Since it can be produced from energy, and (as we know in the case of the steam engine) can itself be converted into well-recognized forms of energy.
