Currituck County, established in 1668, is the oldest and most northeastern county in the state of North Carolina. It is thought that the name "Currituck" was derived from a Native American word for "wild goose." The county covers 273 square miles of long peninsula that runs north and south along the western shore of the Currituck Sound, which, until the early 1800s, was open to the transatlantic shipping trade. In Currituck County, photographs from the 1860s through the 1960s capture the county during the Civil War, Reconstruction, World Wars I and II, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, and technological advances of the 1950s. With the opening of the new Wright Memorial Bridge, dedicated on November 5, 1966, an ever-increasing flood of vacationers traveled through Currituck County to the Outer Banks, and local businesses evolved to accommodate these thousands, and later, millions of visitors. The images seen here show a way of life in Currituck County before the development of tourism.

Relive the days of Currituck, North Carolina when farming and hunting was what brought the world together. In this insider account, Currituck native Travis Morris takes readers into the blind and regales them with stories of powerful men and their guns in a bygone era when duck hunting clubs flourished and featured prominently in local politics, neighbors feuded over duck hunters' rights and interloping men of industry swept in to build lodges. Senators, governors and presidents came, and these are the untold stories of their hunts. From the duck hunting vacation that John F. Kennedy planned but never took to Kerr Scott's apple-flavored tobacco, Morris and friends expose the guileless and the guilty alike in this lighthearted collection.

Nestled within North Carolina's Outer Banks lies Currituck County, a gem to both residents and tourists alike. Prolific local author Travis Morris pays tribute to this close-knit community with personal anecdotes and interviews of lifetime residents, from those who danced at Nags Head Casino (which allegedly had the East Coast's largest dance floor in the 1940s and '50s) to those who hunted fowl at the Wright Brothers Hunting Lodge. Stories of old Currituck will resonate with anyone who remembers feather beds, kerosene lamps and families crowded around the first battery radios to listen to the Grand Ole Opry. Glimpse potato hills"--used to store sweet potatoes in the winter--the muddy roads of Dismal Swamp, fishermen bartering oysters for corn and other larger-than-life characters in this collection of stories about Currituck's early years."
