The term steroid has become virtually synonymous with drug abuse in sport to the majority of the public. However these steroids - androgens - actually comprise only a single relatively small class of biologically active steroids, and are overshadowed by a large collection of compounds, a sizeable number of which are commercial drugs that share the same structural carbon skeleton. The development of these drugs has led to a large body of organic chemistry often denoted as "Steroid Chemistry". Steroid Chemistry At A Glance provides a concise overview of the main principles and reactions of steroid chemistry. Topics covered include: history, isolation and structure determination of steroids steroid nomenclature and stereochemistry natural sources of steroids synthesis and reactions of aromatic a-ring steroids, androstanes, and pregnanes steroids with a spirolactone at position 17 steroids with hetrocyclic ring A compounds derived from cholesterol Based on the highly successful and student friendly "at a glance" approach, the information is presented in integrated, self contained double page spreads of text and illustrative material. Students of chemistry and pharmacy using Steroid Chemistry at a Glance will find they have a resource with which they can quickly, concisely and confidently acquire, regularly review and revise the basic facts that underpin the properties, synthesis and reactions of this important class of natural products. It will also serve as a handy bench reference for postgraduates and professional chemists.

Current Topics in Biochemistry 1973 is based on a series of lectures held at the National Institutes of Health dealing with biochemistry. This group of lectures is the most recent in a program, which was established in the mid-1960s, to review various research fields for the scientific community at the Institutes. The topics for these series were chosen to emphasize active fields of general interest for a diverse audience of scientists. The speakers were therefore encouraged to present an overview of their fields rather than a detailed discussion of current research problems. The lectures in present collection cover the following topics: the problem of predicting the conformation of a protein from a knowledge of its amino acid sequence; studies on the structure of glutamic dehydrogenase; immunologic approaches to the study of proteins; the NIH shift and its implications for the mechanism of biological oxidations; separation of transcribable and repressed chromatin; gene expression in animal cells; and plasma lipoproteins and apolipoproteins.

This book reviews important topics in osteoporosis, with the emphasis on both clinical management and basic research of the disease. From the clinical perspective, topics covering pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis are extensively elaborated. Several more chapters complement clinical overview of osteoporosis, that discuss the effects of nutrition and exercise to bone health, the application of biochemical markers in osteoporosis diagnosis, novel potential drug targets for osteoporosis treatment, and osteoporosis in males and in children. As the prevalence of osteoporosis now reaches epidemiological levels, epidemiology and social impacts of osteoporosis is also reviewed in the book. Basic research on osteoporosis is also highlighted in the book, with a number of chapters dedicated to the review of genetics of osteoporosis, animal models for osteoporosis, and statistical methods in osteoporosis study.
