Excerpt from Curiosities of Literature, Vol. 3 of 4 A period in our dramatic annals has been passed over during the progress of the civil wars, which indeed was one of silence, but not of repose in the theatre. It lasted beyond the death of Charles the First, when the fine arts seemed also to have suffered with the monarch. The theatre, for the first time in any nation, was abolished by a public ordinance, and the actors, and consequently all that family of genius who by their labours or their tastes are connected with the drama, were reduced to Silence. The actors were forcibly dispersed, and became even some of the most persecuted Objects of the new government. Excerpt from Curiosities of Literature, Vol. 1 of 5 This miscellany was first formed, many years ago, when two of my friends were oc cupied in those anecdotical labours, which have proved so entertaining to themselves, and their readers I conceived that a col lection of a different complexion, though much less amusing, might prove somewhat more instructive; and that literary history afforded an almost unexplored source of in teresting facts. The work itself has been well enough received by the public to justify its design. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Curiosities of Literature, Vol. 2 of 3 The Orientalists are not without this literary folly. A Persian poet read to the celebrated Jami a_ gazel of his own composition, which Jami did not like but the writer replied it was notwithstanding a very curious sonnet, for the letter Ali]? Was not' to be found in any one of the words! Jami sarcastically replied, You can do a better thing yet; take away all the letters from every word you have written. Excerpt from Curiosities of Literature, Vol. 1 of 3 The traditionary notion that the life of a man of letters is necessarily deficient in incident, appears to have originated in a misconception of the essential nature of human action. The life of every man is full of incidents, but the incidents are insignificant, because they do not affect his species; and in general the importance of every occurrence is to be measured by the degree with which it is recognised by mankind. An author may influence the fortunes of the world to as great an extent as a statesman or a warrior; and the deeds and performances by which this influence is created and exercised, may rank in their interest and importance with the decisions of great Congresses, or the skilful valour of a memorable field. M. de Voltaire was certainly a greater Frenchman than Cardinal Fleury, the Prime Minister of France in his time. His actions were more important; and it is certainly not too much to maintain that the exploits of Homer, Aristotle, Dante, or my Lord Bacon, were as considerable events as anything that occurred at Actium, Lepanto, or Blenheim. A Book may be as great a thing as a battle, and there are systems of philosophy that have produced as great revolutions as any that have disturbed even the social and political existence of our centuries.
