Since 2011, the art of the Arab uprisings has been the subject of much scholarly and popular attention. Yet the role of artists, writers and filmmakers themselves as social actors working under extraordinary conditions has been relatively neglected. Drawing on critical readings of Bourdieu's Field Theory, this book explores the production of culture in Arab social spaces in 'crisis'. In ten case studies, contributors examine a wide range of countries and conflicts, from Algeria to the Arab countries of the Gulf. They discuss among other things the impact of Western public diplomacy organisations on the arts scene in post-revolutionary Cairo and the consequences of dwindling state support for literary production in Yemen. Providing a valuable source of empirical data for researchers, the book breaks new ground in adapting Bourdieu's theory to the particularities of cultural production in the Middle East and North Africa.

Situated in the fields of contemporary literary and cultural studies, the ten essays collected in Generations of Dissent shed light on the artistic creativity, cultural production, intellectual movements, and acts of political dissidence across the Middle East and North Africa. Born of the contributors’ research on dissidence and state co-option in a variety of artistic and creative fields, the volume’s core themes reflect the notion that the recent Arab uprisings did not appear in a cultural, political, or historical vacuum. Rather than focus on how protestors "finally" broke the walls of fear created by authoritarian regimes in the region, these essays show that the uprisings were rooted in multiple generations and various acts of resistance decades prior to 2010–11. Firat and Taleghani’s volume maps the complicated trajectories of artistic and creative dissent across time and space, showing how artists have challenged institutions and governments over the past six decades.

In December 2010, a street vendor named Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in an act of protest in Sidi Bouzid, Tunisia. His death would soon trigger a wave of significant demonstrations across the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA) known as the Arab Spring. The Arab Spring protests shook longstanding authoritarian regimes, in turn resulting in the adoption of new concessions, increases in levels of repression, or harsh outbreaks of civil war. In addition to these protest consequences, my thesis will be investigating the complex ability of a large political shock like the Arab Spring to impact a society's political and cultural arenas more specifically. In this regard, I analyze the impact that social movements can have on certain peripheral groups, like women. My research therefore examines the relationship between the level of protest intensity and subsequent changes in gender inequality levels. In the development of my primary hypothesis, I investigate this relationship by analyzing the role of two potential causal mechanisms, political opportunity and public opinion. Through a qualitative case study comparing Tunisia, Morocco, and Lebanon, I find the cases that experienced high or medium protest intensity were more likely to possess favorable political opportunities and public opinion toward gender inclusion, and consequently experience a decrease in gender inequality following the period of protest.
