Esta obra aborda el problema de la "feminizacion" de la pobreza, haciendo un analisis de las diferencias de genero en las diferentes formas de pobreza. El tema se centra en el area de america latina y el caribe, donde las mujeres y especialmente las pobres, negras o indigenas estan en una situacion mas dificil. Otro asunto que centra el interes, es el de la injusta distribucion de los ingresos, con el consiguiente desequilibrio entre ricos y pobres. Cuestiona por tanto, las politicas de desarrollo que se han llevado a cabo en los ultimos años, ya que no han podido erradicar las desigualdades de genero ni la situacion de marginacion. En este volumen se incluyen varios trabajos que, desde una perspectiva de genero, presentan una serie de analisis diferentes y proponen nuevas reflexiones.

Beginning with volume 41 (1979), the University of Texas Press became the publisher of the Handbook of Latin American Studies, the most comprehensive annual bibliography in the field. Compiled by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress and annotated by a corps of more than 130 specialists in various disciplines, the Handbook alternates from year to year between social sciences and humanities. The Handbook annotates works on Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and the Guianas, Spanish South America, and Brazil, as well as materials covering Latin America as a whole. Most of the subsections are preceded by introductory essays that serve as biannual evaluations of the literature and research under way in specialized areas.
