This easy-to-use atlas comprises a collection of representative common and unusual virtual colonoscopy (CT colonography, CTC) cases that physicians and radiologists may expect to encounter during their clinical practice. The atlas reflects the important recent advances in image acquisition, patient preparation, and image processing and is thus completely up-to-date. Each case is presented with the native CT images, integrated images obtained by 3D image processing, and colonoscopic correlation. Topics covered include normal appearances, anatomical variants, pitfalls, diverticula, lipomas, inflammatory bowel disease, polyps, flat lesions, cancers, and the postsurgical colon. By presenting the main features of anatomy and pathology, this atlas will serve as an invaluable tool both for radiologists performing CTC and for clinicians who need to review the CTC examinations of their patients.

It is fitting that the first book to be published on the new subject of virtual colonoscopy takes the form of an atlas with an abundance of images. Radiolo gists approaching this exciting new technique for detecting colorectal neoplasms will rely on their traditional radiological knowledge gained from experience with several different tools, including computed tomography scanning, double contrast barium enema, computer image processing, and, of course, conventional colonoscopic findings. In many cases, the resulting blend of image information is entirely novel and radiologists will be faced with unfamiliar image artifacts as well as the problem of distinguishing stool from real lesions. This atlas will be of great value to those applying this new technique. In this volume, Abraham H. Dachman, MD, has persuaded most of the world's authorities pioneering virtual colonoscopy to contribute their cases as well as their insights. The material is effectively organized into a preliminary text sec tion of clinical and research issues followed by a well-illustrated, high-quality collection of case images. It is of interest to note that most of the 2D images re main in black-and-white format, whereas the 3D images are often presented in color largely because the 3D software applications are commercial products and therefore more creatively formatted to resemble the pink/orange tint of human colonic mucosa.

VC has attracted the attention of the media and the public as a much-lauded alternative to current techniques. In response to this demand, renowned radiologist Dr. Abraham Dachman and a distinguished list of international contributors provide their expertise and insight into this new technique. The atlas opens with clear-cut chapters on essential information one needs to become skilled at performing the procedure. Part Two is a case-based approach of lavishly illustrated normal and abnormal findings in virtual colonoscopy. Radiologists trained to perform this new procedure will find this section invaluable in learning to recognize polyps and distinguish real lesions from folds, normal variants, and retained stool. For radiologists and gastroenterologists who need to learn this exciting new technique.

This comprehensive atlas, containing a wealth of high-quality images, illustrates the complete spectrum of presentations of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). It focuses especially on the most recent developments in the use of endoscopy in IBD, providing detailed guidance on endoscopic indices of disease activity, diagnosis, and differential diagnosis. In addition to ileocolonoscopy, small bowel endoscopy, and esophagogastroduodenoscopy, chapters are included on the role of both established radiological techniques, such as CT, MRI, and abdominal ultrasonography, and the newest approaches, including high-resolution endoscopy, narrow band imaging, and confocal laser endomicroscopy. Extraintestinal manifestations and complications are addressed in separate chapters, and the book concludes by presenting surgical findings. The authors are international authorities with diverse expert knowledge who have collaborated to create an ideal tool for all who wish to master endoscopic evaluation in IBD.

Rapid progress in the technique and practice of virtual colonoscopy as well as the conti- ing clinical high interest for this radiodiagnostic procedure made this second edition, only 3 years after the publication of the ? rst edition of this successful volume, necessary. This new edition includes the latest study results and technical developments of this exciting noninvasive diagnostic modality for the evaluation of the colon. The technical presentation and lay out of the text and of the many new illustrations are impeccable. The editors were again able to ensure the collaboration of many international leaders in the ? eld and the book offers a very comprehensive overview of all aspects and issues of CT colonography with a focus on how to perform practically this examination, which requires meticulous technique starting from rigorous preparation, then the conduct of the study itself, and ? nally the interpretation of the results. I am very much indebted to the editors and the collaborating authors for preparing this outstanding volume in a record short time period, which enabled them to include the latest technical advances in this rapidly evolving important radiological method. It is highly recommended to general and gastrointestinal radiologists as well as gast- eneterologists as a most welcome update of their knowledge and as a practical guide in their daily practice. I am convinced that this second edition will meet the same success with our readership as the ? rst one.
