This book offers a practical introduction to helium refrigeration engineering, taking a logical and structured approach to the design, building, commissioning, operation and maintenance of refrigeration systems. It begins with a short refresher of cryogenic principles, and a review of the theory of heat exchangers, allowing the reader to understand the importance of the heat exchanger role in the various thermodynamic cycle structures. The cycles are considered from the simplest (Joule Thomson) to the most complicated ones for the very large refrigeration plants and, finally, those operating at temperatures lower than 4.5 K. The focus then turns to the operation, ability and limitations of the main components, including room temperature cycle screw compressors, heat exchangers, cryogenic expansion turbines, cryogenic centrifugal compressors and circulators. The book also describes the basic principles of process control and studies the operating situations of helium plants, with emphasis on high level efficiency. A major issue is helium purity, and the book explains why helium is polluted, how to purify it and then how to check its purity, to ensure that all components are filled with pure helium prior to starting. Although the intention of the book is not to design thermodynamic cycles, it is of interest to a designer or operator of a cryogenic system to perform some simplified calculations to get an idea of how components or systems are behaving. Throughout the book, such calculations are generally performed using Microsoft® Excel and the Gaspak® or Hepak® software.

This book explores the story behind the science, in particular his relationships with other key figures in the cryogenics field, most notably Nicholas Kurti at Oxford, and his work outside cryogenics, including his novel ideas on the engineering of the pyramids.

Unless you are a specialist or watch a lot of obscure YouTube videos you have probably never heard of He II or superfluid helium. This substance, a unique liquid form of the element helium, is produced and used in multi-ton quantities to enable much of modern science. Altogether, He II is at the heart of more than a dozen large scale scientific facilities world-wide representing an investment of tens of billions of dollars. Over the past several decades major advances in accelerators have resulted from breakthroughs in accelerator science and accelerator technology. After the introduction of a new accelerator physics concept or the implementation of a new technology, a leap in accelerator performance followed. A well-known representation of these advances is the Livingston chart, which shows an exponential growth of accelerator performance over the last seven or eight decades. One of the breakthrough accelerator technologies that support this exponential growth is superconducting technology. Recognizing this major technological advance, we dedicate Volume 5 of Reviews of Accelerator Science and Technology (RAST) to superconducting technology and its applications.Two major applications are superconducting magnets (SC magnets) and superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities. SC magnets provide much higher magnetic field than their room-temperature counterparts, thus allowing accelerators to reach higher energies with comparable size as well as much reduced power consumption. SRF technology allows field energy storage for continuous wave applications and energy recovery, in addition to the advantage of tremendous power savings and better particle beam quality. In this volume, we describe both technologies and their applications. We also include discussion of the associated R&D in superconducting materials and the future prospects for these technologies.

With the 1975 Cryogenic Engineering Conference this se ries enters the third decade of presenting the latest advances in the field of cryogenic engineering. The 1975 Cryogenic Engineering Conference also marked the first time the meeting had been held outside the territorial limits of the United States. Based on the enthusiastic response of the attendees and the exemplary hospitality of the Canadian hosts, it certainly will not be the last meeting to convene beyond the confines of the fifty states. The Cryogenic Engineering Conference Board is extremely grateful to The Royal Military College of Canada and Queen's University for the invitation to hold this meeting in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. The assistance of A. C. Leonard and his staff added immeasurably in making this visit to Canada both a pie asant and a memorable one. The 1975 Cryogenic Engineering Conference was the first meeting of this group on the new biennial conference schedule. Since the last conference in 1973, the Western Hemisphere has experienced the impact of various energy shortages. Thus, it was appropriate that the theme "Cryogenics Applied to Natural Resource Management" for this Conference was not only timely but also an opportunity for the scientific community engaged in cryogenic activities to review the role of cryogenics in meeting these new challenges and problems facing the energy-deficient nations of the world. The Cryogenic Engineering Conference was also pleased to have the Interna tional Cryogenic Materials Conference join them in this meeting.
