William of Tyre’s monumental twelfth-century history of the First Crusade and the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem inspired a rich series of interrelated Old French continuations that proved very popular in the later Middle Ages. In contrast to the thriving literary afterlife that William’s work enjoyed in the vernacular, however, only one continuation of the text is known to have survived in Latin, the language in which William himself wrote. Completed in the early thirteenth century by an unknown ecclesiastical writer in England, this so-called Latin Continuation of William of Tyre picks up the threads of William’s narrative soon after it breaks off in 1184 and goes on to provide a detailed account of the Muslimconquest of Jerusalemin 1187 and the subsequent Third Crusade. Drawing on a range of other written sources, the anonymous continuator of William’s work nevertheless offers a unique contemporary perspective on the tumultuous events of the 1180s and early 1190s and on the crusaders’ failure to recover Jerusalem. For the first time ever, this book provides a complete English translation of the Latin Continuation, together with a new critical edition of the text which, unlike the previous edition of 1934, incorporates both extant manuscripts. Written with both students and researchers in mind, the edition and translation are accompanied by a full critical apparatus, explanatory notes, and a detailed new discussion of the text in the introduction.

The studies here reflect Jonathan Riley-Smith's work as a historian, which began with research on the history of the military orders, the specific focus of the third section here. Out of this grew the concerns covered in the previous sections: an interest in the political and constitutional history of the kingdom of Jerusalem and the relations of the western settlers with the indigenous population of Palestine and Syria; the theory of crusading, involving research on theology and canon law, and the rôle of the popes as preachers, and at the same time detailed consideration of the responses of lay men and women to the ideas that were being presented to them. The two final papers explore some of the implications of crusading ideology and mythology in the modern world.

An exploration of the letters from the First Crusade, yielding evidence for a number of reinterpretations of the movement. The letters stemming from the First Crusade are premier sources for understanding the launch, campaign, and aftermath of the expedition. Between 1095 and 1100, epistles sustained social relationships across the Mediterranean and within Europe, as a mixture of historical writing, literary invention, news, and theological interpretation. They served ecclesiastical administration, projected authority, and formed focal points for spiritual commemoration and para-liturgical campaigns. This volume, grounded on extensive research into the original manuscripts, and presenting numerous new manuscript witnesses, argues that some of the letters are post hoc "inventions", composed by generations of scribe-readers who visited crusading sites from the twelfth century on, adding new layers of meaning in the form of interpolations and post-scripts. Drawing upon this new understanding, and blurring the distinction of epistolary "reality", it rewrites central aspects of the history of the First Crusade, considering the documents in a new way: as markers of enthusiasm and support for the crusade movement among monastic clergy, who copied and consumed them as a form of scribal crusading. Whether authentic letters or literary "confections", they functioned as communal sites for the celebration, commemoration and memorialisation of the expedition.
