Michael Greyson, former college football legend and subsequent head coach for the Arizona Marauders pro-football team, has lain in a coma for six years as a result of a plane crash. Michael's wife, Melanie, decides to start a new life for herself by making use of her teaching degree for the first time. She packs up her three children and moves to the small northern Arizona village of Buena Suerte, (better known to the younger generation as "B.S.",) where she will teach high school English. Melanie's seventeen year-old daughter, K.C., an award winning trumpet player, is distraught when she learns that the high school band program may be abandoned. But then leather-jacketed, ponytailed Jesse Cockran comes riding into town on his old HarleyDavidson motorcycle. A professional trumpet player from New York City, Jesse will also be teaching for the first time, and, like Melanie, is seeking a new beginning. He moves into a teacherage trailer across the street from Melanie on Caine's Road and she and her children soon become emotionally drawn to him. Jesse has to prove himself to the community in spite of the school board president's determination to find a reason to dismiss him. K.C. commences a feud with Cooke Nasby, an Apache boy from the nearby reservation. And despite Melanie's objections, her father-in-law is firm in his attempts to remove Michael from life support. In addition to this clash of wills, Mel finds herself being sexually harassed by an anonymous stalker. The year is filled with romance, conflict, and tragedy. Mel, Jesse, and K.C. all face crisis which will change their lives and the lives of those they love. Crossing Caine's Road is a story of commitment and second chances, of love and loss.

After soldiering in the Union Army and consequently being interned in a Confederate prison camp, Wilson McEwen is finally on his way home to the territories when he is ambushed by an unknown assailant. He is found near death on the road to Eagle Creek and taken home to be nursed by his old friend, Uncle Hy, and his sister-in-law, Sass, who was just a young girl when he left for the war. He learns that an erroneous telegram from the army has informed his wife, Elizabeth, that he has died in battle. As a result, she has left Billy--the son born after Wil left for war--with Sass; sold their prosperous cattle ranch; and left Eagle Creek with Wil's best friend, Mason Savage. While recuperating from his wounds on Uncle Hy's little farm, Wil and Billy at last become father and son. And Wil reluctantly becomes attracted to Sass. One crisis after another prevents Wil from going to find his wife and bringing her home. At last he learns the truth about those he left behind when he went to war. And he must decide what to do with his newfound knowledge.

"Thayer paints a rich picture of Hong Kong politics as well as of the world of international architecture" (Publishers Weekly) in this gripping thriller about the world's most famous architect, who makes a fatal mistake in building the world's tallest skyscraper for the Chinese government. To mark five thousand years of civilization, China has commissioned master architect John Llewellyn to construct a building like no other—a three-thousand-foot-tall crescent of bronze, steel, and concrete, towering above the Hong Kong skyline. Its official name is the Fifth Millennium, but the city's citizens have dubbed it the Gold Swan. It will be the eighth wonder of the world, a testament to China's glory. And it may hold a fatal flaw that could bring it crashing to the ground before it is completed. Llewellyn's chief security man, ex-FBI agent Clay Williams, and young architect Anne Iverson suspect the impending disaster, and they are thrust into the deadly world of Chinese politics—where the truth is a lie, and lies are the only answers they can find. What they cannot know is that there are those in power who want the tower to fall, and with it, the very heart of one of the most powerful nations on earth....
