Four years ago the author of this book issued a slender volume of cricket songs. Seven of these are now reprinted; the rest are new. The cricket ball, for the most part, is spoken of as a female. Once or twice the neuter gender is used. Varium et mutabile semper femina. It is hoped that the introduction of the names of prominent players (and one critic) will cause no vexation. She’s his best friend’s little sister and therefore off limits. College freshman Finley Farrow has two goals this year: make the football team and get over her crush, Shepard Connelly. The gorgeous football player with his magnificent voice would be a star one day on or off the field, but it’s time to let go. She has a different goal now, the end zone. Making the team may turn out to be easy, but practicing with Shepard every day while ignoring her feelings might be impossible. When she shows up to practice looking like a touchdown in the making it’s certainly the death of him. Shepard hasn’t had it easy like the Farrows. His only ticket to Layton University is football. This is a novel containing two parallel stories: a fable about Ortho the Cricket's quest to sing a World Song which transcends the traditional Cricket Song and it is also a story about Dan Lesniak's quest for artistic expression that transcends traditional painting techniques. Ortho and Dan travel different paths to same destination. Both meet obstacles on the way that hinder their quests and threaten to prevent them from achieving their life-long pursuits.
