In Creative Transformations, Krista Brune brings together Brazilian fiction, film, journalism, essays, and correspondence from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries. Drawing attention to the travels of Brazilian artists and intellectuals to the United States and other parts of the Americas, Brune argues that experiences of displacement have had a significant influence on their work. Across Brazilian literary and cultural history, translation becomes a way of navigating and representing the resulting encounters between languages, interactions with Spanish Americans, and negotiations of complex identities. While Creative Transformations engages extensively with theories of translation from different national and disciplinary contexts, it also constructs a vision of translation uniquely attuned to the place of Brazil in the Americas. Brune reveals the hemispheric underpinnings of works by renowned Brazilian writers such as Machado de Assis, Sousândrade, Mário de Andrade, Silviano Santiago, and Adriana Lisboa. Decision making is a complex phenomenon which normally is deeply integrated into social life. At the same time the decision making process often gives the decision maker an opportunity for conscious planning and for taking a reflective stance with respect to the action considered. This suggests that decision making allows creative solutions with a potential to change the course of events both on an individual and a collective level. Given these considerations, we argue that in order to more fully understand decision making the perspectives of different disciplines are needed. In this volume we have attempted to draw together contributions that would provide a broad view of decision making. Much work has been carried out in the writing and editing of this volume. Transformational creativity, as defined in this book, is creativity deployed to make a positive, meaningful, and potentially enduring difference to the world. Transformational creativity is compared to transactional creativity, which is creativity deployed in search of a reward, whether externally or internally generated. Robert J. Sternberg is Professor of Human Development in the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University and an Honorary Professor of Psychology at Heidelberg University, Germany. Previously, Sternberg served in academic administration as a university dean, senior vice-president, and president. Before that, he was IBM Professor of Psychology and Education, Professor of Management at Yale, and Director of the Yale Center for the Psychology of Abilities, Competencies, and Expertise. Sareh Karami is Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology at Mississippi University, USA. Karami earned her doctorate in Educational Studies from Purdue University. Sareh received her bachelor's and Masters in clinical psychology from the University of Tehran. She earned her second Master's in Education from the University of British Columbia, Canada. She served as the head of the research and extracurricular programs department in an Iranian gifted school for more than ten years.
