Excerpt from Progressive Copartnership A business man, who has written a book, is quite certain, for example, to be called a hypocrite, if he does not happen to practise in his own business everything he may preach in his book He ought properly to write without prejudice at the top of every page. Here, of course, the professional writer gets his full revenge; indeed, it is usually he who makes the shocking discoveries of inconsistency. Excerpt from Copartnership in Industry "When a business is thriving, a certain surplus is earned above the ordinary rate of profit and wages in that business. . . It is this perpetually recurring struggle for a surplus which is itself only occasional and precarious, and not determinable beforehand by fixed laws, or even reasonable anticipation, which is the fundamental reason of the existence and powers of trades unions." So wrote Herman Merivale, sometime Professor of Political Economy at Oxford in an Appendix to the Report of the Royal Commission on Trades Unions in 1868. His colleagues in the Majority Report remarked that the habitual code of sentiment which prevailed between employers and workmen in the times when the former were regarded by both law and usage as the governing class is now greatly relaxed, and cannot be revived. Excerpt from Co-Partnership and Profit-Sharing My acknowledgments are due to many authors, and my thanks to many friends. In particular to the Maison Leclaire and to several American and English firms which I have mentioned, for kindly sending me details as to their own businesses; to Mr. N. 0. Nelson for much valuable information and comment; to Professor Charles Gide for information as to the proposals of the French Government; and to Madame dallet-moret for the latest facts and figures as to the Familistere. For all faults and errors I must bear the sole responsibility. It must not, however, be assumed that I approve every thing I describe. To have criticised every important point would have taken too much space. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Co-Partnership After the War: A Memorandum Submitted Feb., 1917, to the Reconstruction Committee Appointed by the H. M. Government XVIII. It may be safely affirmed that amongst thoughtful workmen the wage system is felt to be inadequate to satisfy their desires for a higher industrial standard. The labour problem is more than a question of hours and wages. Some changes in the immediate future are inevitable, and any attempt to adhere to the old order in its entirety is doomed to failure, and may have serious consequences. Employers must be prepared to abandon the untenable position of proprietorship for that of equal parties to a contract. Industrial relations must move towards partnership in some form or degree.
